Andrucha Waddington, 2000

Region: Northeast
Comedy, color, 102 minutes
Based on a real-life story from the northeastern state of Ceará, "Me You Them" follows the life of Darlene and her four simultaneous husbands/lovers. This, of course, is the film's great attraction as the conventional story of one man, perhaps a sugar daddy, and his many loves is turned on its head. In this case, Darlene's story is told with sympathy, imagination, and a great sense of humor. Andrucha Waddington, the young director, is not a "Sertanejo," but a "Carioca" (a native of Rio). His visually inventive style, like that of a number of other successful Brazilian directors of the late 1990's (e.g., Fernando Meirelles), comes from his experience in producing commercials for television.

The film pays homage to the long tradition of film-making in Brazil's arid sertão hinterlands and to the ribald comedy genre. In addition to the glorious settings and the fine acting by some of the country's best talent, "Me You Them" has another major attraction: the fantastic musical score by one of Brazil's greatest treasures, Gilberto Gil. The composer/singer explores the wonderful musical traditions of the Northeast, from "forró" to more intimate styles; the soundtrack of the film is one of the few film music CDs that can easily be a hit on its own, with or without prior knowledge of the movie.
