| View from Lighthouse over town of Colonia |
Across the Rio de la Plata from Buenos Aires is Uruguay, the "Switzerland of South America". Created as an independent
state in the early 19th century to serve as a buffer between arch-enemies Argentina (Spain) and Brazil (Portugal), the country
has beautiful beaches, banking privacy laws and has never been to war. Colonia is a 16th century town founded by the
Portuguse and tossed back and forth as a bargaining chip between the Spanish and Portugese for centuries as they fought each
other. We took a hydrofoil from B.A. (supposedly 1 hour trip, but ours took 3 hours due to broken engine), got another
stamp in our passports and enjoyed the peaceful change to bustling Buenos Aires for a few hours.
