The Global Failure To Disclose Carcinogenic Contaminants In Bottled Drinks Sold To Children

A Maryland panel has offered a half-measure on junk food and soda in schools that is not even mandatory ("Guidelines target snacks at school," Feb. 23).

Schools should not be selling teeth-rotting empty calories that contain a habit-forming physical stimulant to a captive audience of children. They should go soda-free during the day.

Last month, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said it was "ludicrous" for schools to be selling soda and junk food. He urged legislators to ban soda in schools regardless of grade level.

Similar statewide bans have been proposed recently in Montana, South Carolina, Connecticut, Mississippi, Nebraska, Arizona and New Mexico.

Maryland legislators should also pass such a bill.

In the meantime, Maryland voters should support their local superintendents and school board members in taking bold action.
