What is trench art?

Trench art usually refers to decorative pieces made from old artillery shells or other military itmes.  This kind of artwork was frequently produced cellebrate or commemorate a specific event.

Who made it?
  • Serviceman
  • Prisoners of War
  • Civillains

Why? Many different reasons:

  • Alleviate boredom
  • Training - for example Naval apprentices would produce minature cannon or other models to practice metalworking.
  • For sell (for example Indian civilaians would engrave shells, as would WWI French civilians for additional funds).
In addition to artillery shells soldiers and prisoners through the ages have used other materials.  For example, French Napolionic prisoners of war would carve ships from animal bone.
