Trench art usually refers to decorative pieces made from old artillery shells or other military itmes. This kind
of artwork was frequently produced cellebrate or commemorate a specific event.

Why? Many different reasons:
- Alleviate boredom
- Training - for example Naval apprentices would produce minature cannon or other models to practice metalworking.
- For sell (for example Indian civilaians would engrave shells, as would WWI French civilians for additional funds).
In addition to artillery shells soldiers and prisoners through the ages have used other materials. For example,
French Napolionic prisoners of war would carve ships from animal bone.
