Fairfax County and Fairfax City had almost a million residents in 2000. During that same year, the City and
County together, the 19th Judicial District, heard 227,555 traffic cases. Some 32,000 people were charged with misdemeanors,
many of which had potential jail time. The number of traffic cases rose to 251,065 by 2004, and is clearly on an
upward trend.
What does
that mean? Statistically, that means that about one in four people in the Fairfax
area gets a traffic ticket each year. Obviously, some people got more than their share and some people are good drivers,
so this isn't an exact number, but there were a lot of tickets written.
If you have been charged with a driving offense, your insurance, your license, and your job may be
affected. Many people are surprised that they can be prosecuted and jailed not only for Driving Under the Influence
(DUI) but also under a "Reckless Driving" charge for excessive speeding or conduct which the officer deems dangerous.
There is also a potential for civil liability in the event that an accident occurred. You should talk to an experienced
attorney about the possible effects of the charge well before your court date. If the judge tells you that there is
a possibility of jail time and asks if you want an attorney, your answer should be "YES!" Call to set up your free consultation.
