KEYS TO SUCCESS IN CHEMISTRY:  The Grade

There are three important components to this Chemistry class:

1  You will keep a classwork/homework notebook.  This notebook consists of a 3 ring binder, which contains the class notes, worksheets, and homework assignments for each chapter.  Your notebook is not formally graded, but its completion allows you to demonstrate that you have done the course work and homework faithfully, and at my discretion will be awarded extra credit points if you should have a low test grades.

2  Tests are given at the completion of each chapter. Most of the tests consist of both multiple choice and short essay questions that will give you the opportunity to express your learning and practice the SAT/MCAS format at the same time. You will be notified about a test well in advance of test day so that if you are absent the day before a test, you will still be required to take it.  In addition to tests homework quizzes based on the previous nights homework problems will be averaged in to your test grades.  Should you be absent the day of the quiz, the completed homework problems will be substituted for the quiz grade.  Occasionally, instead of the quiz the homework assignment will be collected and

           graded for a quiz grade

3 Labs provide you will hands-on activities that help teach you the concepts that are in each chapter. The most important part of lab day is that you participate positively in the experiment. You will then be required to pass in a lab report based on your findings in lab. There are no right or wrong answers you just must demonstrate to me your ability to follow the directions and prepare a report based on your learning of the scientific process. During the first week of school I will teach you the essentials of lab safety after that violation of lab safety procedures will result in a grade of zero for the day.  If you have an excused absence on a lab day, you will be excused from the lab assignment. However, an unexcused absence can result in a zero grade for the assignment.

Each of the three components above makes up your grade This way I believe that you will be given many different ways to express your learning.  Please understand that I want you to do well and want you to seek me out if you are having any trouble with your work.

I am in my room everyday after school unless I have a teachers meeting, which are generally on Thursdays.  You may either just stop by Room 211 or see me after class to set up a day for extra help

I look forward to teaching you.

KEYS TO SUCCESS IN CHEMISTRY:  Syllabus

331 CHEMISTRY
Level I
4 Credits
Grade 11-12
Prerequisite: Algebra 1or Int. Math 1
This course of study presents the student with the background and learning situations involving the physical principles underlying atomic structure, chemical reactions, chemical bonding, measurement of matter, the mole concept, chemical kinetics, equilibrium and organic chemistry. The goal is to prepare the student for further study at the college level, either on a career or liberal arts basis. Laboratory techniques and procedures are learned with laboratory equipment and scientific apparatus, whenever possible, in order to establish proper attitudes, habits and essential safety skills

KEYS TO SUCCESS IN CHEMISTRY:  The Learning

Chemistry can be a difficult subject to learn, here are some suggestions to help you be successful.

1.      Always come to class with your binder and textbook, the use of a scientific calculator (one that can do exponents) is allowed to help with the math component of chemistry.  If you don’t choose to buy a scientific calculator then you will be required perform the chemistry math problems by hand, the problems require use of exponential notation and dimensional analysis, a math tutorial is found in Appendix B of your textbook.

2.      I have provided you with a chemistry website that explains many of the topics that I will be teaching you.  In addition, the website has a complete online copy of the textbook, so that students with internet access can do their homework without having to carry their textbook home each day.  To go to my website type in the following exactly http://mysite.verizon.net/vze4gq6z/

3.      In addition to your calculator and textbook, your daily agenda is an important tool for chemistry.  In it is a periodic table, and some conversion charts that are valuable reference guides you will learn to use, in addition, I will be giving out some charts that are essential to solving chemistry problems.  These charts can be taped into your agenda, and referred to during all tests.  Additionally, your agenda is necessary for all trips to the restrooms, the nurse, or for late passes to class.
