PARISH BASKETBALL

A Mass celebrated by Msgr. Gerry McCarren and a dinner recently capped a successful fourth season of the Holy Trinity Parish CYO Basketball program. Some 70 children participated in the program. The coaching staff included: Fitzpatrick and Steve Criscuolo (fourth grade Green), Frank McIntyre and Chris Walter (fourth grade White), Anthony Cavallo (boys 5-6 grade), Tom Luzzi (boys 7-8 grade), Criscuolo, Rob Coloney, Larry D'amico and Maggie Fitzpatrick (girls 5-6 grade), and Coloney and Bryant Pantano (girls 7-8 grade).

Coaches Coloney (girls 5-6 grade) and Criscuolo (fourth grade) and their teams were recognized for perfect seasons. Criscuolo's team also won the recent Westfield 4th Grade benefit tournament for Sister Pat's Camp while Coloney's team won the CYO championship against an excellent squad from St. Thomas in Rahway.

At the dinner Coloney, a senior at St. Peter's Prep, was presented with a plaque to commemorate his service to the program over the last two years. Fitzpatrick said, "A coach like Rob doesn't come along very often. He brought a lot of heart, dedication, and enthusiasm. We wish him the best of luck at Sacred Heart University next year and beyond." Bryant Pantano was also recognized for his commitment to Holy Trinity CYO; he assisted Coloney with the 7-8 grade girls and will "graduate" from the program as his daughters move on to Mount Saint Mary Academy

Holy Trinity's service project for the Archdiocesan CYO League was to collect school supplies and funds for new Christ the King Preparatory School in Newark. At the school high school students work one day a week in a corporate setting to offset the cost of their tuition. Christ the King's Anthony Nicotera, Director of Development, said, "We received over $1,300 and school and office supplies from Holy Trinity and on behalf of the students and administration, I want to thank Holy Trinity for their generosity and support of our mission."

In summing up the season Bill Fitzpatrick, the programs Athletic Director said, "We are proud of all of our kids and grateful to their families for allowing them to participate in our program, which is relatively new. We know they have many basketball choices and so we are really thrilled with how well the program is doing. It is a great way for parish families to celebrate community and have fun together."

OUR PHILOSOPHY

“Everyone Plays” philosophy.  Every effort will be made to maintain a developmental program that is well balanced. Every eligible child who makes a commitment to attend practices and games on a consistent basis, pays the required fee (scholarships are available) and is a Holy Trinity parishioner will make the team.  If the team is oversubscribed then either a second team will be formed or players will be scheduled for a set number of games on a rotating basis and/or extra games and scrimmages will be scheduled so that every player receives meaningful playing time.  Minimum playing time guidelines will be observed. Within this team philosophy the coaches and players will strive for personal improvement, excellence, teamwork and winning basketball games.

Holy Trinity Parish Basketball Offerings:

Open Clinics in the Off-Season from April - October.

Competitive Teams representing Holy Trinity Parish in the Union County CYO league.

12 game schedule on weekends from December-March (5th-8th grades). The expected fee is $125.00. 10 games for Pee Wee league (3rd-4th grades). The expected fee is $100.00. Team practices start around mid October. Practice is Wednesday evenings during the season and some Saturdays in the pre-season.

If teams are oversubscribed, roster spots are prioritized based on seniority, prior team involvement and parish affiliation. League uses “running clock” timing so games are relatively short. As such, a roster size of 8 to 10 per game is appropriate. Some teams may carry extra players on the practice roster for development, back-up and rotations.

We are currently considering an occasional Saturday Evening Recreation Program for High School young people during the winter months. This offering will be contingent on getting enough volunteers.
