Using telnet or FTP to connect to Stuyvesant High School
To utilize your account on the Stuyvesant High School
network from your home,
you need two items from the school:
1. Your login ID (This can be obtained from Mr.
Wong or Mr. Zamansky)
2. Your password (This can be obtained from Mr. Wong or Mr.
Zamansky)
Using telnet
To use telnet, you will also need a computer with a modem and a Telnet
client program. Fortunately, a Telnet
client program is usually bundled with Windows, the Macintosh operating
system, and other operating systems.
On Windows ME, 95/98 (and probably Windows 2000)
computers:
1. Open the Start menu on the bottom left corner of the
screen and select the Run command.
2. Enter: telnet homer.cs.stuy.edu
Alternatives to
homer.cs.stuy.edu:
If homer.cs.stuy.edu is down, try a workstation that you've used:
EXAMPLES: maggie.cs.stuy.edu,...
3. Enter your login name and your account password at the prompt, just as you would in the
school.
On a Macintosh computer:
1. If there's a Telnet icon, double-click on it and follow steps 2 and 3 given above
for Windows computers.
2. If there isn't an icon, search for Telnet (a Telnet client program should be there).
Once you've found it,
double-click it and follow steps 2 and 3 given above for Windows
computers.
Upgrading your Windows Telnet client program:
Many students are perfectly content with the Telnet client programs that come
bundled with their operating
systems. Many students, however, aren't satsified with the performance of the Telnet
client program that comes
with Windows (the lack of a full-screen display is one complaint). If you're interested in
upgrading your Windows
Telnet program, you can follow these steps:
1. Use your browser to go to the Tucows Telnet
download page
2. Chose a freeware or addware Telnet client program. Both CRT and
NetTerm are rated highly for Windows.
3. The program you select to download should be self-installing.
1. If you don't have the WS_FTP LE program, go to the Tucows WS-FTP LE download page and download it.
The LE version (LEarning version) is freeware.
2. Start up the program. The Session Properties menu will appear. Fill in these items as shown below in green:
A. Under the "General" tab
Profile name: SHS FTP server
Host name/Address: ernie.stuy.edu
Host-Type: Automatic detect
User ID: your SHS user name
Password: your SHS password
B. Now click on the "Startup"
tab
Initial Remote Site Folder: /home/students/200X/username
where 200X is your graduation year
Initial Local Folder: C:\Dev-C++
(if C:\Dev-C++ is the directory from and to which you want to upload
and download)
C. Now click on the "Apply" button to
save these settings.
D. Now click on the "OK" button to connect.
