Having its roots in the synagogue tradition, the cantor has become a vital ministry in Catholic worship. The cantor serves
the community as leader of song and Psalmist at all Sunday liturgies. Serving as the leader of the
sung prayer at liturgy, the cantor leads the faithful into full participation in the music at Liturgy.
Cantors
should possess a pleasant singing voice, some ability to read music and be a person of faith and prayer.
An audition is
required in order to be a cantor. Being a choir member is a good way to receive training that can prepare one to
be a cantor. Each cantor goes through an initial training period. Additional training and formation
is offered on an ongoing basis.
Cantors serve the parish at weekend Masses and on Holy Days. Scheduling is based on the cantor's availability and
the needs of the parish.
