At last...drinking water. Bubbling down  from the higher ground. Clear and cold and inviting, In New England, in the high ground of our mountains, what harm could it be to drink from this wonder of the earth. In the lowlands and nearer to the civilized world, it would never have crossed my mind, but up here,high in the mountains, I drink right from the source. The fears of getting this and that don't enter my mind. I'm Gods creature here, and it 's hot and I'm heathy. Is there no place left to drink the water as we swim? Oh, yes ! Still there up in the high ground of New England. I've drank from The Ganges, so why not here? Is it in my head? You decide.

The Path to Heaven

After the car is parked, the open path to the beach is the last frontier before you reach the heaven that awaits. The salty smell of the air and the sound of waves crashing on the sand ahead leads you onward. Fumbling to carry all the beach gear and stuggling to get a grip on it all, somehow doesn't matter knowing what will greet you just beyond the little hill. The mild breeze and the hot sand under your feet allow a sort of compromise, just long enough to find your way to a blanket and into the shade of your beach umbrella. Soon, a swim, and all the cares you arrived with are long forgotten as you enjoy your piece of heaven.

Broken Free

This piece was drawn in the summer of 2003 when I was spending a good bit of time on the beach. I had imagined that somewhere below the surface there was perhaps a scene similar to this one. I imagined that a boat line had let go or was maybe cut loose when the anchor became lodged in a pile of rocks on the sea floor. Now all that remained was the drifting of the frayed line and the rusting anchor. I liked this piece because it  could present two sides. One, a loss, maybe a boat that had pulled away in a storm and now was damaged on the jetties, or on the other hand, a release, freed from the contraints of the shoreline, sailing cleanly and smoothly over the waves to freedom. Below is an example of a "one pencil/one paper" drawing. I like the way that the moon has settled into a nice sheen over the water and also how the sails on the boats seem to be of an ancient mariner type, no boom, puffy sail. The hut on the hill overlooking the arriving boats looks inviting and the whole piece gives me a calm feeling.

Settlers Reason is another example of a "one pencil/one paper" drawing. I get a feeling when I look into this one, about crossing that ravine and how perhaps while waiting to decide how to get over it, the traveler took a good look at the view, and instead, settled there, eventually crossing over on his rope bridge.The theme of a hut on the hill again, and this time it's up high in the mountains, with the moon shining through the mist.

Baby Bits

Baby Bits is a quick pencil sketch that I liked so much, I developed into a color piece. Somehow the faces of these "bubbles" hits home with me. I think it's the curiosity in each face, and the innocence in the look of a child, of which we should never let go.

Rowboat

Here near the ocean, I see a number of scenes like this one where a small boat has been pulled up on the shore and sits empty.  I like the peaceful feeling of the tide moving it up and down the shoreline, sometimes floating and sometimes beached all the way on to the sand. Such a common scene on Cape Cod , I called it simply "Rowboat".
