Lara Croft Tomb Raider

What makes LARA CROFT TOMB RAIDER so appealing is its  emphasis on physical action, its fantastic sets and mechanical effects, and its interweaving of temporal and philosophical concepts into what might otherwise have turned into just another  music-video-cut action thriller.

Not that it's a great  intellectual achievement. No, it does have its share of improbability and suspended-belief moments. But its actions set pieces are extraordinarily well crafted and photographed, and its characters don't just act like cartoon cutouts. They have some depth and complexity, much more so than, say, X-Men's tortured souls.

TOMB RAIDER constantly surprises with the elegance and beauty of its physical set pieces, while at the same time maintaining a blistering action pace. Not a bad achievement.

An added bonus is the very interesting commentary by the director. I just wish he had said something about Lara Croft's phonograph.

(Unfortunately, the second movie in this series is not as good as the first)
