OKAVANGO -BOTSWANA

Bud in Botswana
The Okavango Swamp is a huge marsh (10,000 sq km) in the Kalahari desert. The Okavango river flows south from Angola into a geologic depression where it slowly evaporates. It is the only major river that never makes it to an ocean. The water is filtered by the papyrus so it is clear and clean. While riding in a wooden dugout canoe called a 'makuro', we saw hippopotamus, elephants, baboons and crocodiles. At night we heard the "whoof" of lions not far from our camp. In the picture is an anthill. This is a small one, some of them get to be 6 meters high!
