LOTHIAN -SCOTLAND
The first Earl of Douglas of Scotland, William was sent away to school in France by his father Sir James the Good. Sir James had been granted a lordship by the king for bravery in battle, which William would inherit. Sadly, Sir James died while William was away.
In 1346, William finished school and returned to Scotland. On his arrival, he found his godfather, the notorious "Knight of Liddesdale", blocking his claim to the Lordship of Douglas. William swore revenge. Seven years later, a full grown William ambushed his godfather in the Ettrick Forest and killed him.
After that, no one disputed his claim and he became the most powerful Lord in north Scotland. He then built a beautiful castle by the sea and called it "Tantallon". It overlooks the Firth of Forth and is just a wee bit of a drive east of Edinburgh.
