The Golden Gate Bridge is not painted gold. It is painted orange vermilion. It gets its name from the Golden Gate Strait which is the entrance to the San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean. It is not painted end to end each year but touched up as needed. The paint protects the Bridge from the high salt content in the air which rusts and corrodes the steel.
The Golden Gate Bridge was constructed between 1933 and 1937. Laborers working on the bridge were quite safe. A net, suspended under the Bridge from end to end saved nineteen men who became members of the "Half-Way-to-Hell Club." Since then, after the safety net was removed, more than 1,200 people have committed suicide by jumping from it. It is believed that the actual number is much higher. Bud didn't notice anybody jumping the day he was there.
