Bud with the Liberty Bell
flag compass
Philadelphia was very important during the American Revolution. It, not Washington D.C., was the capital city of the United States from 1776 until 1800. The two most important US historical documents, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were drafted and signed here.
The Liberty Bell is inscribed with the words "Proclaim Liberty throughout all the Land". It rang the day American independence was declared on July 4th, 1776. The bell spent the next two years hidden from the British and after that rang for sixty-eight more Independence Day celebrations until a small flaw grew into a serious crack. Other well-known bells are the great bell of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris and Big Ben in the Clock Tower of the British Houses of Parliament, London.
