LONDON -ENGLAND
Bud arrived in London in early November and as we left Paddington train station people kept calling to him saying, "Hey Guy!" They even offered us a penny for him, which of course we turned down. Bud later learned that November 5th is Guy Fawkes Day, a day for celebration and fireworks. Some people create an effigy of Guy Fawkes and beg for coins before setting him on fire. Guy Fawkes was involved in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 to blow up the English Parliament and King James I. The plan was to blow up barrels of gunpowder hidden in a vault under the Houses of Parliament on Nov. 5, 1605, when Parliament opened. The plot was discovered and Guy Fawkes was caught. He was executed on Jan. 31, 1606. Some people believe the bomb was never meant to go off and Fawkes was set up.
In the background is the clocktower of Westminster Palace, home of the famous bronze bell "Big Ben". Another famous bell is the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia.
