PARIS -FRANCE
The Eiffel Tower was built in 1889, fifty-three years after another famous Parisian monument, The Arc De Triomphe was completed. It is the first 'Skyscraper'. When it was first built many people thought it was ugly. One poet said he had lunch under it every day so that he wouldn't have to look at it. But now, over a hundred years later, people are used to it and think it is beautiful.
It was designed by a man named Gustave Eiffel to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. He was a well known bridge engineer. He also built the framework to the Statue of Liberty which was given to the United States by the people of France. His nickname was the "magician of iron". Paris is the capital city of France.
