While we were in South Africa we stayed with Phinias and his family. At the time, he had a job with a foundry. They live in a one-room building with a steel roof. At night, everyone unrolls a sleeping mat on the packed earth floor. For an hour at dinnertime, Phinias connects a car battery to power a small light bulb and a radio. Dinner is served in a large bowl which everyone sits around, scooping out the food with their fingers. Those present also get a small bowl of water to rinse their fingers in between mouthfuls.
