Bud at Cadillac Ranch
flag compass
The ten Cadillacs buried nose down in a wheat field are called Cadillac Ranch. It is a work of art created by the Ant Farm, some San Francisco designers, and Stanley Marsh 3. In 1970 Mr. Marsh 3 built the world's largest soft pool table on a farm outside Amarillo. A little later, the Ant Farm was building a house that looked like a praying mantis eating a Volkswagen. They liked each other's ideas and wrote some letters. Mr. Marsh told the Ant Farm he had some land he wanted to build something cool on and asked them to look at it. Three members of the Ant Farm drove along Route 66 to an empty stretch of plain. Ant Farmer Doug Michels said: "To me, it was a dolphin idea. Chip Lord, Hudson Marquez, and I were standing in a wheat field off Route 66 in the rain. And you know how the wheat waves and ripples in the wind? Well, suddenly we imagined a dolphin tail fin sticking up out of the wheat. Then the dolphin tail fin became a Cadillac tail fin. That was it. There was Cadillac Ranch."
