Course Objectives:  Focus on precision and practice in basic techniques.  The first Fall 2009 term covers roughly the first half of the jujitsu techniques to be covered.  The second Fall 2009 term covers the second half.  The course outline describes the core activities of each class.  Other activities are added as time allows. 

 

 

Course Outline

Class 1

September 8

 

Introduction, updates.  Falls and rolls. 

Hand and arm techniques: Waki gatame, kote gaeshi, kote hineri, shiho nage.  Balance and off-balancing techniques.  Roles of uke and tori.   

Class 2

September 10

Review of Class 1 and dynamic applications. 

Hand and arm techniques:  Ude garame, elbow takedown, kote mawashi, hammerlock.   Round robin exercise.

Class 3

September 15

 

Review of Class 2; dynamic applications.  Certification of falls, rolls, and basic arm/hand techniques. 

Ground techniques: Guard, top-mount, back mount, and side mount.  Round robin exercise.

Class 4

September 17

 

Review of Class 3 and flow exercises.

Ground techniques: Pins (osae komi), including kesa gatame, kata gatame, kami-shiho gatame, and yoko gatame.  Defenses and reversals.  Ground randori.

Class 5

September 22

 

Review of Class 4 with emphasis on transitions.

Ground techniques:  Submissions, including ude garame, juji gatame, and triangle choke.  Takedown/ground flow exercise.  Ground randori.

Class 6

September 24

 

Review of Class 5.  Dynamic applications.

Ground techniques: Chokes from guard, back mount, and top mount.  Defenses and escapes.   Ground randori.

Class 7

September 29

 

Review of Class 6.  Certification of basic ground techniques.     

Fighting stance and movement.  Strikes: Jab, hook, cross, straight punch, upper cut, palm strike.  Shadow randori (light free sparring), multiple attacks.

Class 8

October 1

 

Review of Class 7. 

Evasion, blocks, traps, and counters.  Dynamic exercises.  Shadow randori, multiple attacks.  

Class 9

October 6

 

Review of Class 8.

Kicks – Front, roundhouse, side.   Use of kicks in self-defense.  Combination strikes and kicks.  Shadow randori.

Class 10

October 8

 

Review of Class 9.  Certification of basic strikes and kicks.

Standing throws:  KOSTO -- kubi nage, o goshi, seoi nage, tai ososhi, o soto gari.  Defenses and counter throws.  Uke/tori demonstrations.

Class 11

October 13

 

Review of Class 10.  Dynamic applications.

Standing throws. Full execution of basic five throws.  Defenses and counter throws.  Uki goshi, sode tsurikomi goshi.  Uke/tori demonstrations.  Standing judo randori.

Class 12

October 15

 

Review of Class 11.  Dynamic applications.

Standing throws: Harai goshi, hane goshi, uchi mata.  Defenses and counter-throws.  Uke/tori demonstrations.  Full randori.    

Class 13

October 20

 

Certification of basic standing throws. Test preparation.  Review of basics in all classes.  Uke/tori demonstrations.  Multiple attacks.

Class 14

October 22

 

Belt tests.  Uke/tori demonstrations.
