Peer support provides an opportunity for people to direct their own recovery and advocacy process and to help others develop skills to lead meaningful lives. Services help foster individual growth by having people feel comfortable with themselves, develop a sense of identity with support from others and establish a sense of self-determination.
Our Place is open a minimum of 3 days a week. Currently, the program is open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, from 2:00pm to 7:00pm, and Saturaday from 11:00am to 4:00pm. You can "drop in" any time during those hours and stay as you like. There is no requirement for attendance, other than you must be 18 or older, diagnosed with a mental illness, and have a strong desire to learn and share with peers. We also invite family and friends to attend for special groups, presentations, and activities. A monthly calendar indicates the days and hours of operation, as well as some of the planned events/activities for the month. Transportation is not provided by Our Place. We encourage use of the local public transportation system, which stops within steps of the building. Also, transportation arrangements may be made through the Southern Maryland Area Rural Transportation (SMART) program.
Our Place is run by persons in recovery for persons in recovery. Individuals are encouraged to be as independent as possible by taking control of their own recovery path.
