A

Animagi - An animagi is a wizard that has the ability to turn into a certain animal at will. Animagis are registered with the ministry so that their markings won't be abused. There are 7 known registered animagis and 3 unregistered ones (Rita Skeeter, Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew)

Apparating - The ability to disappear and appear again somewhere else almost immediately. You need to pass a test before you are allowed to do this.

Aurors - The aurors are here to search out evil, such as giants and death eaters. Sometimes, they are given the right to kill them.

Azkaban - The wizard's prison. Guarded by dementors.

Basilisk - The Basilisk is the king of snakes that kills people with his stare. Only the heir of Slytherin can control it.

Bloody Baron - He is Slytherin's ghost, and is covered with transparent blood.

Bubotuber - A plant that makes this petrol smelling pus used to cure acne.

C

Champions - Champions represent their school at the Triwizard Tournament that takes place every four years. The champions are chosen by the Goblet of Fire.Represent school at Triwizard Tournament. The champions are required to participate in three tasks that 1)Daring; 2) Powers of Deduction; and 3) Ability to cope with danger.

Cobbing - A quidditch term, foul excessive use of elbow

Crookshanks - Hermione's ginger cat.

Currency - The wizards have a currency that is changeable with Muggle money, though the exchange rate is not known.
Galleons - gold coins
Sickles - silver coins. 17 sickles equal one galleon
Knutes - brass coins. 29 knutes equal one sickle

D

Death Eaters - Voldemort's supporters. All death eaters have the dark mark tattooed to their right arm.

Daily Prophet - The newspaper that wizards and witches read. Sort of like the New York Times or London Tribune.

Dark Mark - The dark mark is fired by a death eater when they have killed. It is the shape of a skull.

Dementors - These are robed creature like things that guard Askaban. They don't have eyes, but they sense people by their emotions. When given orders, dementors can perform their kiss, where they literally suck out your soul.

Diagon Alley - A street full of shops that sell magical goods, such as books, wands and broomsticks. Try thinking 5th avenue in New York.

Fang - Hagrid's boarhound.

Fat Lady - She is a potrait that is used to guard the Gryffindor commonroom. When you tell her the right password, the potrait will swing open.

Fawkes - Albus Dumbledore's pheonix. Fawkes provided the core of both Harry's and Voldmort's wand.

Floo Powder - When a pinch of Floo powder is put into a burning fire in a fire place, a door will appear and lets you speed travel.

Gillyweed - A chewy seaweed like thing that helps you breathe and swim underwater.

Gobstones - A wizard game similar to the muggle game of marbles. The stones squirt liquid when you lose.

Grimm - A giant dog that is usually an omen of death.

Gringotts - A wizard bank run by goblins.

Gryffinder (brave) - Named after Godric Gryffinder Scarlet is the house color.

Hedwig - Harry Potter's owl.

Hogsmeade - The only non-muggle settlement in Great Britain. Third years and above are allowed to visit Hogsmeade.

Hogwarts School of Magic and Wizardry - A wizarding school found in Great Britain. The school was founded by Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Slytherin and Hufflepuff. The school is protected so that if a muggle looks at it, they will only see a broken down warehouse.

House elfs - Non human slaves. They are not paid, nor do they wish to be. They are freed once their owners gives them clothes.

Howler - A type of mail that uses voice, not text.

Hufflepuff - Another Hogwarts house. The house colors are yellow and black, and this house was named after Helga Hufflepuff. Hufflepuff's are loyal workers and aren't afraid of toil.

Impediment Curse - Slows down and obstructs attacker.

Imperious Curse - An illegal curse against humans. The person casting the spell has total control over a person.

Intermarriage - The marriage between pure-blood and muggles, for the no. of wizards worldwide are declining.

Karkaroff - Karkaroff was a death eater and was once jailed in Azkaban. He was caught by famous auror Alastor Moody. He was eventually released when he aided the MOM by providing names of current deatheaters. After being released, he became the headmaster of Durmstrang Institute.

Knight Bus - Emergency transport for stranded witch or warlock.

Leprechaun Gold - Fake gold coins that disappear after a few hours.

Leprechauns - Irish national quidditch team mascot.

Little Hangleton - The town where the Riddle's used to live.

Lord Voldemort (a.k.a Tom Marvolo Riddle) - He is one of the greatest dark sorcerer of all time. Most wizards prefer to call him You-know-who or Who-who-must-not-be-named out of fear. He nearly lost all his powers and his life when he attacked Harry and his parents. Fortuanately for him, he survived. He has risen once again in the fourth book as witnessed by Harry Potter.

Lucius Malfoy - Draco Malfoy's father. He was once a deatheater.

Ludo Bagman - Ludo Bagman is the Head of Department of Magical Games and Sports. He was once brought to trial for being a supporter of Voldemort.

Madam Pomfrey - The Hogwart's nurse.

Madame Maxime - Headmistress of Beauxbatons Academy. She is also a half giant, like Hagrid.

Madam Prince - Hogwart's librarian.

Mad-Eye (Alastor) Moody - Moody is a retired auror, and tought Defense Against the Dark Arts in Hogwarts in Harry Potter's fourth year. He has a magical eye, and a normal eye. The magical eye is capable of seeing through objects, and right throught his head. His face is heavily scarred, and he has a wooden claw foot.

Marauder's Map - This map once belonged to Sirius Black, James Potter, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew while they were still students in Hogwarts. The map is a detailed map of the school grounds, including all the secret passageways. There are also miniscule dots the represents every person and tracks their movement, showing their exact location. The map fell into the hands of the Weasley twins, but they gave the map to Harry in his third year.

Moaning Myrtle - She haunts the girl's bathroom at Hogwarts. She died when she looked into the eyes of the Basilisk.

Mudblood - An equivalent to a swear word- a wizard not of wizarding parentage, in other words has muggles for parents.

Muggles - Non-wizards.

Nagini - Voldmort's snake.

Neville Longbottom - Neville's father used to be an auror, but after Voldmort's fall from power, they were tortured for information on Voldmort's whereabouts. His father and mother are now insane. Ever since then, Neville has been raised by his grandmother.

N.E.W.T. - Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Test. Highest qualification that Hogwarts offers.

Nearly Headless Nick - Gryffinders' ghost. He was not properly beheaded, therefore his head hangs at an angle, attached to his neck by a piece of skin.

Nifflers - Creatures the detect treasure.

Nimbus 2000 - A very good broomstick model. Harry Potter used to own one.

Nimbus 2001 - An even better broomstick model. Draco Malfoy, seeker for the Slytherin team owns one.

Omniocular - Special binoculars that can replay action, slow down action, and provide play by play viewing. They cost 10 galleons at the Quiddtich World Cup.

O.W.L.(Ordinary Wizarding Levels) - Proficiency demonstrated by passing test.

Parselmouth - The ability to talk to snakes. This ability is extremely rare, and the most well known parsel mouth of all time is Voldemort. Harry Potter is also a parsel mouth.

Portkey - Objects to transport wizards from one place to another at a prearranged time.

Patronus - This wards of dementors, for they project hope and joy.

Peter Pettigrew - Nicknamed wormtail. He is an unregistered Animagi, and a loyal supporter of Voldemort. He was allegedly killed by Sirius Black, one of his former classmates.

Peeves - A poltergeist.

Pensieve - Pensieve is used to store excess thoughts that can later be viewed at your pleasure.

Pig - Ron Weasley's owl. Pigwidgean is the full name.

Pocket Sneakoscope - Lights up and spins around if someone untrustworthy or something suspicious is around.

Polyjuice Potion - Potion used to transform a person into another's bodily form.

Potter, James and Lily - Harry's parents. They were both killed by Lord Voldemort. James was an unregistered animagi, and nicknamed Prongs.

Professor A. J. Remus Lupin - A Werewolf. He taught Defense Against the Dark Arts in Harry's third year.

Professor Bins - Teacher of History of Magic. He is a ghost.

Professor Flitwick - Charms teacher.

Professor Gilderoy Lockhart - He is an author of numerous books, and taught Defense Against the Dark Arts for one year in Hogwarts. However, what is written in his books are fake, they were plagerized from those who accomplished those magical feats. Lockhart is extremely full of himself and a know-it-all.

Professor Grubby-Plank - Temporary care of magical creatures teacher.

Professor Kettleburn - Care of magical creatures teacher in Harry's first year. However, she retired and Hagrid was hired in her place.

Professor McGonagall - Head of Gryffindor house, and teaches transfiguration. Extremely strict but can be quite nice.

Professor Severus Snape - Head of Slytherin house, and teaches potions. He intensely dislikes Harry Potter, and is Harry's least favorite teacher. Rumors go that he wants to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts.

Professor Sibyll Trelawney - Divination teacher. She once predicted the rise of Lord Volemort.

Professor Sinistra - Astronomy teacher.

Professor Sprout - Herbology teacher

Ravenclaw - A Hogwarts House. It was named after Rowena Ravenclaw, and their house color is blue. Their special trait is wisdom and cleverness.

Reductor Curse - Blasts solid objects out of the way.

Rita Skeeter - A reporter for the Daily Prophet, and an unregistered animagi. She goes around trying to tarnish reputations by telling stories that are only part true and unjustified.

Ron Weasley - Harry Potter's best male friend.

Scabbers - Ron Weasley's rat. 13 years old. It has a missing toe, and is actually Peter Pettigrew in hiding.

Shield Charm - Temporary wall to deflect minor curses.

Sirius Black - Sirius Black allegedly killed 12 muggles and 1 wizard. He was imprisoned in Azkaban for years, though he didn't go insane. As a animagi, he was able to turn into a dog and escape Azkaban. He was Harry Potter's dad's best friend, and Harry's godfather.

Slytherin - A Hogwarts house. It was named after Salazar Slytherin, and their house color is blue. This house is famous for producing evil wizards, including Lord Volemort. They are ambitious and extremely cunning.

Sorting hat - A hat placed on first years to determine which Hogwarts house he or she will be assigned to.

Spinched - Leaving part of yourself behind while apparating.

Squib - A person born in a wizarding family that has no magical powers.

Ton-Tongue Toffees - Enlarges eater's tongue.

Time Turner - Turns time back or to the future.

Triwizard Tournament - The tournament was established nearly 700 years ago, and takes place every 5 years. The three largest European schools of wizardry participate by entering a champion each. The champions are selected by a goblet of fire. The champions compete in three tasks. The winner gets 1000 galleons.

Unicorns - These magical creature are born gold, turn silver at age 2, grow horns at age 4 and are full grown at age 7. Their horns and tails are used in many potions, and their blood can save your life.

Whomping Willow - A tree planted to protect werewolf Remus Lupin when he was a student at Hogwart before the invention of the Wolfsbane potion.

Winky - Female house elf. Once owned by Barty Crouch. Freed because she had Harry Potter's wand. Stays at Hogwarts. Refuses to be paid.

Weasley Family - Father works for Ministry of Magic. Son Ron is Harry's best friend. Bill and Charles Weasley, oldest sons. Bill has ear ring and ponytail. Fred and George twin sons. Invent joke products.

Weird Sisters - Famous singing duet.

Wizards - Magic folk.

Wolfsbane potion - Keeps werewolf harmless when a full moon.

Wormtail - Servant to Lord Voldemort. Committed murder for Lord Voldemort.

WWN - Wizarding Wireless Network.
