"The Two Towers" Breaks CoS DVD Sales Record

Pre-release UK sales of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers have broken all records at internet retailer Amazon. Over 50,000 pre-orders have been taken ahead of the video and DVD's release on Tuesday. Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets was the previous record-holder, having taken 40,000 pre-orders in April.

This doesn't surprise me, it was an awesome movie!

Harry Potter On Cartoon Network

Michael writes in with a summary of a Harry Potter-themed episode of the Cartoon Network show "The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy":

It was called "Toadblatt's School of Sorcery". The students were sorted with a Squid Hat which also sang a song like the Sorting Hat. There were two houses that really hated each other which were Gunderstank and Weaselthorpe. Weaselthorpe wanted to win the House Cup because Gunderstank had always won because Dean Toadblatt always favored Gunderstank and hated Weaselthorpe (which is kind of like Snape) so he always took away ludicrous amounts of points away from Weaselthorpe and always gave a lot of points to Gunderstank. Nigel Planter was the conceited equivalent of Harry because he had a "L" scar on his head and he had the glasses and his hair was kind of like Harry's. He took all of the credit from Mandy who was the smart one, which would be Hermione. And Billy was the equivalent of Ron because he was the comic relief. Anyway, since Weaselthorpe wanted the House Cup, they sabataged Gunderstank. Mandy messed up an invisibility potion because she replaced the eye of newt with eye of needle. Then, she put a "Gunderstank brand dragon in a can" in Toadblatt's house which burned Toadblatt's favorite broom the "Cumulon 6". Lastly, Nigel Billy and Mandy switched the sign that led to Enchanted Meadows (the Dark Forest?) so that it led to the Manticore's cave. Toadblatt got burned so he took away many house points which led Weaselthorpe to win. At the end, Toadblatt overheard Nigel saying that he was the one who came up with all of the plans to sabatage Gunderstank (but it was really Mandy). They expelled him and made him fight with a one-eyed troll. I didn't really like the episode because it was such a ripoff of HP, but it was number one cartoon on Cartoon Network.

Harry Potter Gets Another Complainer

Craig Stern of the Daily Trojan offers his views on the Harry Potter craze:

I don't consider myself a snob or a cultural elitist. I think pop cultural phenomena are perfectly fine, generally speaking, but this Harry Potter thing is really getting out of hand. But a line has to be drawn. Call yourself postmodern. Call yourself an enthusiast. Call yourself whatever you like, but when you run around spouting Harry Potter terminology and comparing everything you see to Harry Potter, there is only one word that really describes you: "lame."

Harry Potter Diet Plan

Jenny McCartney of The Telegraph writes in her column what she thinks JKR needs to do to reclaim the throne at the top of the betseller lists: she must launch the Harry Potter Diet Book, a collection of magical recipes to make unwanted flab vanish.

Atkins diet knocks Harry Potter Off BestSeller Spot

Harry Potter has been knocked off the top of the book charts by a book about the Atkins diet.

The children's edition of the Order of the Phoenix spent seven weeks at the top of the bestseller list, thanks to a record 2.8 million sales.

However, it has now been beaten off the number one spot by Dr Robert Atkins's Diet Revolution, saysThe Times.

Dr Atkins's publishers, Vermillion, said two recent articles in The New England Journal of Medicine and a BBC documentary showing the effects of the diet had boosted sales of the book by up to 75%.

The Quidditch in Harry Potter 3

Source: The Leaky Cauldron
The North Devon Gazette has article on Reed Chill Cheater, a North Devon company that has just finished a large order of innovative thermal suits for the PoA film!

Even wizards like to keep warm and the company has just completed a large order for the cast of the next Harry Potter film, entitled "The Prisoner of Azkaban."

"Apparently it is for an incredibly wet Quidditch game," said owner Chris Reed.

"Of course you won’t see our suits, as they will all be under capes and other wizardly gear. Four suits were made for Harry Potter himself — together there was 10 dry suits and 18 full sets of thermals."

Prisioner Of Azkaban Set Report

Thanks to IHP.net
Hi Jasen, here’s today’s (Friday) report, there are also some news/gossip bits I overheard at the set at the end of the story. The Alfonso '5th Movie' comes from a very close and reliable source to him (can’t say who though). The others are just gossip, the midges story is true, I’m not sure certain about the GoF Emma 'Signing', but I was told it happened yesterday.

Once again we get to the park fairly early. We head straight to the 'Beach' set. Rehearsals are already taking place. We enter the location from the forest behind the set. We expect to see barriers fairly soon, we were wrong. They hadn't extended the barriers. However we are quickly spotted by a PA or runner, and are asked to move round to watch the filming as we are in the line of the camera. We are taken round the side of the set, and sit down. Ron and Hermiones doubles are on set with Alfonso Cuaron. A stand in for Hagrid is in the water, he briefly puts on a 'Hagrid Head'.

No barriers have been set up along the trees, in theory one could still walk round the back of the set, where Ron and Hermione would be standing. In practice a guard keeps a watchful eye on those that arrive. By Midday the situation worsens with crowds gathering and trying to move up into the forest to look down on the set. People start to remark that they can go where they want if there are no barriers. Much to the dissatisfaction of the crew standing nearby. Obviously this causes a problem for the crew as they don't want fans clutching copies of OOTP in the films background. A PA comes over and speaks to the security guard. They decide to bring a tape barrier across the
edge of the trees to prevent people crossing by. I lean against a tree close to the barrier and begin to sketch.

1:30 cast leave beach set

LUNCH BREAK

1:40 Robbie Coltrane leaves in blue Mercedes Benz. He looks hot and tired, he gets straight into his car, doesn't sign any autographs, but waves to fans as he leaves.

We go and get some sandwiches.

2:38 Crew are back on set, Hermiones stand in is on set, with Rons double.

2:59 Rupert Grint arrives

3:15 Alfonso is back on set wearing a green jacket and gray combats.

Daniel, Rupert and Emma are all now on set. The scene revolves around Hagrids case. Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid) is in the water, Ron Hermione stand on the beach, and Harry sits on a rock. Hermione calls out. "How did it go Hagrid?......at the hearing?"

Next lines are rough and not exactly what was said as we missed some words out.

Hagrid: "Well firs of all, they explained why we were all 'ere" ....."I got up and said Buckbeak was a good hippogriff…..”

Hermione: "And? what did they say?"

Hagrid: "But Lucius Malfoy .....(Ron says something).....said he was a danger to the school. He got the worse possible sentence.....-----silence----"Buckebeaks been sentenced to death"

Alfonso: "That was great."

4:10 end of shooting, "Cut" is shouted and "thanks everyone, thats a rap". Applause from crew and Alfonso goes and shakes Daniel, Emma and Ruperts hands.

The cast leave and are collected by cars. We have a conversation with an assistant, (on whether we can approach the director or not), a second PA suggest its a bad idea, the first PA says it shouldn't matter as the rest of the crowd don't know who he is (Alfonso) and are waiting for Dan, to which the other PA replies, it doesn't matter if they don't know, the moment they see another kid get an autograph they'll all want one from him. Despite the fuss we approach Alfonso and get his autograph, I also ask him to sign a sketch I had just done.

The second PA was right by the way, over ten people surged forward after we got our autographs. But Alfonso was great and signed all of them. Alfonso gets in his car and leaves, we also leave, and head home.

Next week the first unit film crew will be back at Sheperton. The second unit will remain on site at Virginia water lake, shooting scenery and mainly extras. Daniels last day of filming at Virginia Water was today.

Aug 15

Rumours and Gossip: 'overheard on site'

Alfonso wants to direct the fifth movie. Was asked to do the 4th but wants a break. Would like to come back for the 5th and 'has asked WB to give him an offer'.

Frozen lake scene and Whomping Willow are in Sheperton studio awaiting further shooting.

The crew was constantly attacked by midges while in Glen Coe and spent much of the time wearing nets.

One of the film crew Drivers is the station master at Kings Cross. Others will appear in moving paintings in Hogwarts, in one scene when McGonagall mentions Sirius, the paintings 'gasp'.

Emma signed on to the GOF (last of trio to do so) yesterday (14th Aug 2003).

Potter Poker hand

From Mugglenet:
Reader Kelly wrote in with an interesting Harry Potter sighting:

My husband is setting up a poker tournament, and was online looking for some rules and what-not. He found out that there is a hand in poker called the "Harry Potter", and it's when you get a Jack and a King. I have no idea why they call it that, and then I did some surfing and found a site that referenced this hand, and they call it "Harry Potter - People needing people", and I still don't get it!

That makes two of us. Anybody have any ideas?

A few of Mugglenets visitors posting on the comments board spotted that if you take the first letter of Jack and King, you get JK, as in JK Rowling. And the "People needing people" name means that a Jack and a King are useless without another Jack or a King.
