African Statues, Figures
and Carvings
|
|
Atye (Atie and Ebrie) - Côte d'Ivoire
Statues, both standing and seated, feature bulbous legs and
arms. Marked by a vigorous and dinstinctive style, these carvings indicate a strong Baule influence. Arms are
frequently raised and touching the head, hands usually connecting to the body. The scarification marks are in relief
and often accomplished by the insertion of small wooden plugs into the surface. This type of statuary is sometimes referred
to by the tribal name 'Alangua' - it is more appropriate to attribute these pieces to the people living along the border the
Ebrie lagoon - partly Atye...partly Ebrie.

Bamana (Bambara) - Mali
Though erroneously referred to as "Bambara" by French colonials,
the Bamana people have never identified themselves this way. Mostly located in the central region of Mali, the Bamana are
distinguished from other Mande people (such as Soninke and Mandinka) by their resistance to religious conversion. 'Being
Bamana' is less an ethnic issue than it is a matter of religious practices and representations that seek to explain and influence
their world through rituals. Every manner of day-to-day existence is interpreted and divined for meaning. Most
objects created by the Bamana reflect a religious system based on initiation societies.

Baule - Côte d'Ivoire
Three hundred years ago the Baule, of the Akan peoples, migrated
westward from Ghana when the Asante rose to power and now inhabit central Côte d'Ivoire. The Baule people have
a tradition of admiring well made objects and respect of those who craft them. Baule sculpture and carving exhibit
a smooth patina, balanced proportion, clear lines, and a rounded, slightly asymmetric structure. Unlike many other traditional
African cultures, the Baule artisan chooses to sculpt, rather than being born into his trade.

Benin - Nigeria
Benin art belongs to a living culture and has a deep historical
and social value, which goes far beyond aesthetic and monetary value. Benin art treasures were treated as little more than
curios during the 1900's when they were first brought to Europe, but as time went by the wonderful quality of the ivory carving
and bronze casting became highly appreciated as prices soared in art auction rooms all over the world.

Dogon - Mali
The Dogon people of the Bandiagara escarpment, Mali, have
been described as the most studied and least understood tribal group in Africa. Their history, technology, cultural wealth,
art and even oral legends are among the most involved in Africa. The Dogon Moved into this area in the 15th century, displacing
the previous occupants, the Tellem. Agricultural, patrilineal and polygamous, the Dogon have a society arranged
around trade specialization. In terms of artistic production, they have mastered all the main materials that are used
in traditional African art: figures in stone, iron, bronze, and wood.
In addition to the more than 80 known mask forms still in
use, the Dogon also produce numerous sculptural forms, of males, females, hermaphrodites, nommos (ancestral spirits), animals
and unidentifiable entities.
