If I had to name a primary hobby, it would be reading. I confess that I read mostly for pleasure and not for personal growth. I am silly enough to believe that most reading is good for you and you grow from it. So, here goes:

Tolkien
I am reading J.R.R.Tolkien right now, in preparation for teaching a community class on the subject at Salem Community College. Although I expect this reading to change and grow rapidly, and though I have read Tolkien's brillian trilogy a number of times, my current reading includes:

Tolkien by Humphrey Carpenter
The Two Towers by Tolkien

Robert A. Heinlein
Heinlein is a long time favorite Science Fiction writer. Though he has been deceased for a couple of decades, recently a new book was discovered. It is as it seems to be, a failed first novel. The extra biographical and critical material in the book reveals much about Heinlein's personal life and his decadent ways:

For Us the Living

Terry Pratchett
Dawn and I read Pratchett together. He is funny in a Monty Python sort of way. Think Douglass Adams meets the brothers Grimm. His Discworld series is a spoof on almost everything. If you are offended by reading about witches or satirical false gods ... better read something else. If you want to try Pratchett, it is not necessary to start at the beginning but it is sometimes helpful. The first book in the Discworld Series is The Color of Magic:

Knight Watch
The Thief of Time
Monstrous Regiment
The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents

Sue Grafton
writes a gritty series of detective novels featuring Kinsey Milhone. They are set in Southern California and are moving from "A" to "Z". So far, Grafton has reached R is for Ricochet, though I have not read that far yet. These are the ones I've read most recently:

C is for Corpse
D is for Deadbeat
E is for Evidence
F is for Fugitive
G is for Gumshoe
H is for Homicide

Jan Karon
Another series Dawn and I are reading together is the Mitford Series by Jan Karon. Father Tim is an inspritational and flawed human character and Mitford is a pleasant and wholesome place to visit:

At Home in Mitford
A Light in the Window
These High Green Hills
A Common Life

More serious reading recently includes a variety of subjects. My professional reading usually is on ministry and Biblical subjects. However, I find that all non-fiction feeds my messages with the One Truth from different perspectives.

Traditions of Christmas by Ace Collins
The Brother of Jesus by Shanks and Witherington
God's Voice in the Stars by Kenneth C. Fleming
Among the Heroes by Jere Longman
The Unchurched Nextdoor by Thom Rainer

Some random reading I have done recently includes:

I, Robot, by Isaac Asimov
3001 The Final Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke
The DaVinci Code by Dan Brown
The Janson Directive by Robert Ludlum
