Statement Game
The Pates answered some questions Friday night with a convincing win over Parkland.  Even the folks who gave them a chance didn't predict the margin of victory, nor the ability of the front seven to limit Parkland's running game.

In past years,  Freedom's schedule was soft for the first 4 or 5 games and then really tough to close the season.  With the LVC rotation changing this year, it's very different.  Freedom is already battle tested, playing three tough contests against the best teams from the Lehigh division as well as an improved Dieruff squad.

Freedom's tough schedule continues next Friday as Northampton visits BASD to kick off the Northampton County Division games.  The underated Northampton squad has gotten off to a great start coming off of a tough 2007 campaign.  They are 4 and 1, having suffered their first lost against Emmaus last Friday in a close contest.

Getting better every week...
After a rough 1st quarter that saw Dieruff score a touchdown and Freedom run only 3 offensive plays, the Pates turned it around and scored 42 unanswered points in the 2nd quarter.  The mercy rule kicked in for the 2nd half.  Freedom substitued liberally and the teams traded touchdowns after halftime.

Cap'n Slappy and Ol Chumbucket were impressed with the Patriot fans Talk Like a Pirate day celebration.

Big test for the Pates next week as they play Parkland up in Orefield.

Rough Night
Friday was a rough night all around.

I missed the game with Emmaus on Friday.  I was stuck in our marvelous air travel system and did not make it home until Saturday.    From all reports, the Pates had a tough time also.

Well, the next game is the important one, and the team looks to bounce back next Friday at BASD against an improved Dieruff squad.

See you there...

Whew....
Freedom fans who followed the team last year were having flashbacks to the 2007 Central Catholic game.  But, Freedom used their big play ability to score early and then hung on for a hard fought victory in a game that had many ups and downs for both teams.  Both Whitehall's spread offense and aggressive blitzing gave Freedom fits at times.  Turnovers, penalties, and special teams play were also big factors.  A blocked extra point by Freedom and missed two point conversion by Whitehall ultimately decided the game.

It doesn't get any easier with a trip to Emmaus next Friday.  Emmaus returns many starters and pre-season picks have them as one of the league leaders.  Should be another good one.

From Coach Roeder...

To the Freedom Football Family,

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday season.

In preparing this letter, the first thing I did was to look at my remarks from last year at this time (Jan 3, 2008). We were coming off an Eastern conference championship and a school record for wins in a season. In that letter we established the goal and the mindset of wanting to achieve MORE!

It is safe to say that WE accomplished that goal.  In looking back at last year there are many obvious and tangible examples of how we were successful in this endeavor. Accomplishments we should be proud of include another new school record for wins, the school’s first playoff wins, unprecedented individual recognition for our players on the state and local level, and numerous team and individual changes in the Freedom football record book.

In continuing to reflect on this past year, I realized that 2008 was more than just numbers. We did MORE in many ways and we did take Freedom football to a new level.  Improvements were made in many areas that don’t always show up on a stat sheet or in the newspaper. The game day program, booster club involvement, the bonfire, alumni participation and overall community support are just a few areas where I feel we made substantial gains in moving our program forward.

These achievements came as a result of the hard work of many people. I would like to personally thank our players, coaches, support staff, the Freedom HS administration and faculty, the band and cheerleaders, Gridiron Club, spaghetti dinner volunteers, Patriot club and all of those associated with the Freedom football family for their contributions to our success.

It is now time to move forward again and continue the climb. Many of the names and faces will be different next year, but the philosophy of OUR WAY will not change. I am sure that we all agree that the job is not done and there are more steps to take. We as a program must continue to focus on improving in everything we do. I have challenged our players and staff to take up the motto “COUNT ON ME”. We are looking for those people that we can count on in 2009.

Thanks for your support and let’s work to make every day, A Great Day to be a Patriot!
