In the second half,  Liberty was able to generate yard of the ground and had three key scores.  Freedom had a drive ended by a turnover on the 1 yard line, but was able to generate a score of a 63 yard hook and ladder play.

Hazleton closed to within three points in the second half, as Freedom had a touchdown called back by a penalty.  Freedom's overcame two penalties in the drive that seperated the two teams, converting a third and thirty and a third and 15 with key catches by Josh Fortin-Smith and Will Velekei.  Jermel Lee returned a fumble 40 yards for a TD that put the game away.  Lee had another strong game on defensive, with a key sack as well as numerous tackles.

Rushes 28 – 120

Passing 16 – 28 for 226

Summary

Freedom scored early and often as Wyoming Valley West could not match the Pate’s team speed.  Will Velekei started the scoring on the first drive.  Eddie Mateo added a couple of touchdowns including a 67 yard run.  Wyoming Valley West was unable to move the ball in the first couple of drives, but had some success once the went to a spread offense.   They were able to connect on short passes and then go up to to Muhammed, who had an excellent day.  Wyoming Valley West looked like they might get back into it, scoring on the first possession of the second half, but Freedom answered with Mateo’s long run and pulled away from there as the Spartans had no answer for either the run or passing game of the Pates.

Passing:  2 - 9 for 17

Summary

Freedom got off to a great start, as Greg Taylor drilled the opening kickoff into a Liberty player and the Pates recovered the fumble.  However, the Pates went three and out and from the rest of the half it was pretty much all Liberty.  Liberty established the running game and had two long drives that ate up the clock and resulted in touchdowns.  The Pates kept the score close as DeShawn Serrano returned a kickoff for a 93 yard touchdown and Jermel Lee blocked an extra point.

The second half was a different story, as the Pates took the opening kickoff in for a touchdown, and stopped the Canes on the next series.  However,  an errant put hit a Pates blocker in the back and Liberty recovered.  The Canes then took advantage of the short field to score the winning touchdown.  The rest of the game was back and forth and the Pates were driving with time running out.  After a 50 yard completion to Colin Frietas, the clock ran out with the Pates on the Liberty 25 yard line.

Passing:  7 -20 -2 for 106

Summary

The first half was dominated by Freedom's running game, featuring some long runs by Eddie Mateo.  Freedom had a touchdown and some good gains nullified by penalties and also missed a field goal - which held to the score to 14 - 0 at halftime.  Will Velekei had a key interception.

The second half was back and forth, but the Pate's ability to move the ball on the ground and some big plays put the game into the mercy rule early in the fourth quarter.  Big plays included a Yusif Reddick inerception on the one, following by Reddick's 94 yard over the shoulder catch and run for a touchdown.  Also, Dylan Markwith fell on a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown.

Beca

Rushing:  41 for 101

Passing  15-24-3 for 200

Summary

Freedom controlled most of the first half, with two drives leading to touchdowns and one stalling at about the 20.  The running attack drove the offense as it did all night.  Beca was unable to get league leading running back Darius Webb untracked, but got the passing attack rolling towards the end of the half.  Jermel Lee intercepted a pass in the end zone to end the drive as the half ended.

Beca continued to find success with the passing attack in the second half, tying the score with two touchdowns in the first quarter.  Freedom was able to answer with two touchdowns of their own towards the end of the quarter.  Tariq Taylor continued his strong play at D-end, coming up with a big interception for the Pates.  This was followed by a Yusif Reddick run for a TD.  Reddick appeared to be stopped at about the 7, but put a move on that absolutely froze the defender.

Beca, as they did all night, fought back with two touchdowns to knot the score in the fourth, the last coming with 2:25 following a 90 yard drive.  This drive followed an outstanding punt by Will Velekei following a nice catch of a high snap.  Freedom then turned the ball over on an interception near mid field.  The Pates defense held, forcing a punt.  Freedom then drove down the field to the five, allowing Greg Taylor to kick a game winning field goal with 1 second remaining.

An interesting sidelight was the kicking game, because of the big play ability enjoyed by each sqaud.  Both teams obviously payed close attention to special teams, with specially designed formations on kick return and kick offs designed to keep the ball away from dangerous returners.  It appeared that the Pates won the special teams battle, benefitting from superior field postion from kickoff and punt returns.

Easton

Rushing 27 - 76
Passing 11-23-1 for 135

Summary

Freedom dominated the game early with three scores.  The Pates were able to establish the run and Mel Lee scored off an interception caused by pressure on the Easton QB.  A penalty kept them out of the endzone on the next drive, but Greg Taylor kicked a 35 yard field goal.  Penalties and a stiffer Easton defense slowed the Freedom offense for the rest of the half.  Easton was not effective on offense in the first half, but stayed in the game with a late touchdown generated by a successful fake punt and an halfback option pass.

The second half was  marked by a series of big plays, including a long touchdown catch and run by Colin Frietas and an electrifying punt return by Yusif Reddick in which we picked up a short punt between three or four Easton defenders and raced to the end zone.  Easton had some big plays of their own, including a kickoff return for a TD.  Each time the Pates looked like they were going to put it away, Easton answered with a score.

In the end,  Freedom was able to answer the Easton scores with drives and maintain the lead.  While the much maligned Easton passing game was better than expected, Freedom held Easton to 76 yards rushing as Freedom continues to get good line play.

Northampton

Rushing:  53 - 271
Passing:  3 - 10 -2 for 10

Summary

After an early Eddie Mateo TD set up by a long catch and run by Yusef Reddick, Freedom broke open the game late in the second quarter with two more touchdowns.  These were scored by Mateo in the last 3 minutes of the half.  The third TD followed a fumble recovery by Jermel Lee on a failed hook and later play by Northampton.

Northampton effectively exectued the wing-t, gaining almost 300 yards on the ground.  However, Freedom was able to make plays on defense causing Northampton to turn the ball over on downs 3 times.  In addition, Freedom benefited from 3 turnovers, including an acrobatic one-handed interception by Reddick.  As a result, Northampton was limited to one touchdown.

Ryan Tress continued his efficient play at QB,  throwing for 190 yards on 10 passes with no interceptions.  A 61 yard TD run by Mateo and a 54 yard screen pass to DeShawn Serrano for the final TD closed the game out in the fourth quarter.

Parkland

Rushing:  24 for 57
Passing:  9 - 19 - 3 for 155

Summary

A defensive struggle with neither team able to generate a ground game throughout the game.  Freedom was able to make big plays in the passing game and also generate turnovers to provide the margin of victory.  Parkland's offense was pretty much limited to one big play, a TD of over 70 yards to Jaleel Clark.

Yussif Reddick had a monster game, with a one-handed grab over the wrong shoulder for a TD, a couple of interceptions, a pass for a td, and a big punt return.  Colin Frietas also contributed big plays with two TDs.  Tight End Mike Muzyka had key catches, one dragging a defender three yards for a first down.  The offensive line struggled with Parkland's 3 - 5 defense in the run game, but pass blocking was excellent.  Eddie Mateo found little running room, but continued to contribute with excellent pass blocking.

On defense, the front seven shut down the Parkland running game and the secondary had three picks.  The defensive front four had an outstanding game.  The Parkland Wing - T is noted for long drives that eat the clock.  This never happened, giving the offense enough opportunites to generate big plays and take the victory.

Rushing:  32 - 131
Passing 13 - 28 - 2 for 124

Summary:

The first quarter was all Dieruff as the Huskies were able to run off a long scoring drive on the first possesion.  The Huskies converted three fourth downs, overcame three penalties, and recovered their own fumble on the drive.  Freedom then had a three and out in their only series in the 1st quarter.

The game began to change as Ivan Encarnacion drilled the Dieruff QB on a blitz.  This was followed by an interception return of 34 yard by Jermel Lee to start the 2nd quarter.  From this point on, Freedom was able to disrupt the Dieruff offense with pressure on the QB and generate big plays on offense.  Yussef Reddick got behind the defense for two big receptions including an 87 yard TD and also had a punt return to the one.  Eddie Mateo had 4 touchdown runs, including a 7 yarder in which he bounced off a tackler in the backfield, made a couple of nice cuts and dragged a defender into the end zone.  Another note from the 2nd quarter was the improved play of the defensive line, which kept the Dieruff QB contained and also applied good pressure.

Rushing 35 for 111

Freedom used big plays to score in the first half, including an 83 yard pass to Colin Freitas and a 53 yard pass to Yousef Reddick.  Special teams were a big factor with kickoff returns establishing good field position and a blocked extra point by Jermel Lee that was the difference in the game.

Whitehall utilized a spread offense to control time of posession, running off many more plays than Freedom, but yardage was about even due to Freedom's ability to generate big plays.  Whitehall was most effective with the short passing game.  Also key was Freedom winning the turnover battle, picking off three passes while losing one fumble.

The game was essentially decided in the last couple of minutes, with a potential tying two point conversion pass falling incomplete in the end zone.  Freedom then recovered the onside kick and ran off the remaining time in two snaps.

8/29/08 Freedom 41 CB West - 7

Rushing - 37 - 265, Mateo - 16 for 127

CB West

Rushing 34 - 136
Passing 3 -12 - 2 for 112

Yusef Reddick got the season off to a great start with 76 yard kickoff return for a touchdown.  Freedom dominated the first half, building a 34 - 0 lead.  Freedom was able to execute their game plan against an outmanned CB West squad in the first half, and distributed playing time in the second half.  Ryan Tress did a nice job running the offense, Eddie Mateo looked sharp. The first team defense was not really tested and special teams did a good job, with new kicker Greg Taylor pinning CB West inside the 30 on the majority of kickoffs.  Dylan Markwith had 2 interceptions.
