Inconsistency plaguing Pens in the early going
In the first week or so of the 2015-16 season Pittsburgh has not done much to differentiate themselves from last year's team. But upon further examination, the only thing separating this squad from success is consistency. Back to back losses to Nashville (8-0 on the year so far) and a loss to Tampa put the team behind the 8 ball. However, victories against perennial powerhouses NY Rangers, Ottawa Senators, and Detroit Red Wings have this team believing in their future. "We've come to play every night"said captain Ryan Bystrom. "If the team can become a bit more consistent we can beat anyone on the league." Leading the good has been the play of the first line of Pugachev (5g, 4a), Axelsson (3g, 4a) and Charbonneau (3g,4a). "We've blended well together so far, but we have a long season ahead of us" said young phenom Dick Axelsson. Also a major contributor so far has been newcomer Jordan Staal, having scored 3 goals and 4 assists as the center of their shut down line. "I have some pressure on me considering what the team gave up to get me (3 1st round picks as compensation for signing the RFA). But I feel goo so far and things will get better." Leading the bad thusfar has been the play of goalie Al Montoya. He has given up 3.55 goals per game while starting all 7 contests. "That's too much. I need to be better for these guys" said Montoya. "We're learning to play together now. It will get better as the season goes. It has to." The Pens have won 2 in a row. But big games this week against the Sens, Rangers, and Philly are looming.
