Today’s Virginia
Indians are descended from the Algonquin-speaking people (members of the Powhatan
Confederacy) and Sioux-speaking people (Monacans) who have lived here for
hundreds of years. Because Virginia Indian tribes are not recognized by the federal
government, they were left out of most early 20th century books and articles on Native Americans. Since the 1980s, many good resources include Virginia Indians. This
guide lists some of the sources about Virginia Indians
– in history and contemporary times – available at County
of Henrico Public Libraries and provides links to information beyond
our walls.
