1931 Holton "hatbox" Horn in F

This is a Holton Collegiate "hatbox" French Horn made in 1931, which is right handed and has piston valves (but no water keys). The mouthpipe, bell, and second valve slide all remove when the horn is returned to its case. Although it has many characteristics of a mellophone, when assembled, it plays in French Horn octave F like any single horn, just in the opposite hand!

Among the more interesting traits it has, the valves are offset to match the finger spread, and are bottom sprung with a protrusion in the bottom valve cap to self-center the springs. Because the middle of the cap is used for this, it also has with three very small outer air holes replacing the usual one large one.
