Jimy Young or JY Jelly,as he is
known to his friends, has been on the music scene for
quite sometime. As a drummer, keyboardist, engineer,guitarist,singer-songwriter,and
producer. As a kid in NJ, he started out playing in the bands at school, and
was the
drummer for local Do-wop groups. One of which had a top ten hit with ,The Boy
From
New York City, which was later covered by the Manhattan Transfer. After making
a
small name for himself on the east coast
,he relocated to California. and started playing
guitar. Arriving just in time for the new wave/punk rock scene, he started
playing around
the LA area, hooking up and working with members of Blondie, the Adapters, the
Jets and
a few other bands. Always a recording enthusiast,it was during this time that
he began to
record rehearsals, and then demos
and live shows for his musician friends. This led to
him producing a couple of sessions as well. After a few years, JY came back
to the
East coast ,and the NYC scene.Playing around in coffee houses and helping to
form
songwriter workshops, most notably at Downtime with Melissa Cross. Always a
groovemeister, he hooked up as a sideman with a few local groups. As a multi-
instrumentalist, he would play
whatever was necessary. Also writing songs for some of
the bands as well.He finally started putting together bands of his own to showcase his
original music. Working around in the
tri-state area,he displayed a natural talent for
taking a song and making it his ,as well as his own distinctive style of original
material.
Mr. Young has also written music for a few independent films, background and
ambient
music for documentaries, and the theme for a local cable game show.A potent
performer
and storyteller,he is a delight to be seen.Holding court twice a week at Downtme
with a
tight blues/R&B unit known as the Restless. This is one cat that needs
to be seen to be
.believed.
