What a great find!
Here, tucked away in the shadow of its parent Mountain, Mt. Snow, was a separate, unconnected, low tech, subdued ski
area. I got there the day after it officially closed but, as with a number of
other areas around New England, was given a ride up the hill at the back of a snowmobile with one of the very generous employees
and, for nearly the first time since last December, was treated to a power run down a mountain – complete with a snowmobile
escort. What a view and what a gorgeous, sun shiny day – I even got a moment
to catch some golden rays while lying back on their picnic bench (it was an aluminum-legged bench – not like those beautiful
all wooden benches back at Quoggy Jo).
A bit about their lodge – the unique curved front façade of glass of the lodge left me with the feeling that those inside were seated
in a stepped stadium style layout with the slopes as the playing fields. With
the exception of the electrical transformer in the middle of slope in front of the lodge, it was gorgeous view up the mountain. I also got to visit the gift shop as they were packing up excess inventory AND continuing
in the spirit of this place, they fond a sew on patch for me in the bottom of one of the boxes already packed.
Lastly – the name
Haystack is one of the best I ran into – it evokes both a country feel blended with an image of a hill. For me, it reminds me of my youth when I would jump from a high beam in my barn into a huge pile of hay,
in what we called the hayloft. Thanks you guys for a great visit for yet another
example of that great New England generosity.
