About the Guys

Roger Rosa

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Roger began his music career with dreams of riding the garage band wave to rock and roll stardom.  Quickly realizing his family had no garage, Roger switched in high school to the more serious and equally garageless pursuit of playing jazz on the double bass (a.k.a. the contrabass, bass viol, upright bass, standup bass, bass fiddle, bull fiddle, doghouse, something unprintable).  Roger moved to the Washington DC area in 1999 and has played jazz around the District, and with the District, ever since.  Roger enjoys candlelit dinners, walks on the beach, and monster truck rallies.  He is looking for an audience with a sense of humor who will make him laugh.  True to his bass player roots, he doesn’t give interviews.

Seth Popkin

Since his youth, Seth dreamed of making his mark by becoming a star bullfighter.  He spent three challenging years pursuing his dream by seeking his Bachelor of Science degree in Bullfighting (BSBf) at the University of the Red Flag in South America.  Alas, having run out of funds for painkillers and bandages, Seth found his goal out of reach, dropped out of school, and gave up his dream.  Needing another outlet for his energy, Seth turned his attention to the saxophone.  Beginning with sonatas and shifting to sambas, he has played in big bands, small bands, armed bands, and contra bands.  With District Jazz, Seth is thrilled to be swinging his saxophone instead of his red flag, warming listeners' blood instead of spilling his own.

Dan Nathan

When Dan was shooting baskets in his driveway when he was fourteen years old, his father accidentally cut down a tree onto his head.  After the neighborhood stopped spinning and the shooting stars faded away, he was pronounced unharmed, but ever since then his sense of balance has been a little bit skewed.  He thinks the tree to the noggin explains the high degree of syncopation and other rhythmic interest evident in his piano playing, as well as his somewhat off-kilter sense of grace and personal expression.  If Spiderman was bit by a radioactive spider, Dan's own unique style suggests that he was bitten by the spirits of Dizzy Gillespie and Earl Monroe.

Dan shows that unique style to fullest effect supporting his talented and swinging bandmates in District Jazz.  You'll find his love of playing infectious -- you'll be bitten, too.

A cool swinging jazz trio for your club, party or affair.
