The Yaak River Timber and Mining Company (YRT&M) is a fictional On30 shortline located in NW Montana.  It serves several silver mines, the gold mining town of Yaak River, the mill town of Troy and the rich timber country of the Cabinet Mountains.

This is the first layout I've built since High School and I'm treating it as a series of learning objectives.  I intend to document my experiences and share them with anyone interested.

My earlier layouts have all been modern and in HO- but I have always loved the look of larger scale Narrow Gauge and Bachmanns equipment made if affordable for me.  I intend on building a larger On3 layout someday that connects to the YRT&M Co., but for now I'm enjoying this project!

While I plan on going into some depth on my projects this website isn't really a primer or introduction to On30.  That has been done very well by Harold Minkwitz, Larry Rickert and James Eckman.  Links to their sites are on the links page.

Upcoming Projects:

  • Building Wood Craftsman Kits
  • Building Resin Kits
  • My First Plaster Structure Kit
  • Scratchbuilding a Backwoods Water Tower
  • Laying Track
  • Introduction to Benchwork and Scenery
