Anatomy of a Surname
Surnames are generally derived
from one of four sources:
the name the father (patronymic),
the locality, the occupation,
or a descriptive nickname for the person.
Surname spelling and pronunciation has evolved over centuries. Until th 20th century,
the spelling of a surname was not fixed. Before then, it was not unusual to see the same person's surname spelled in
different ways from record to record. In the 100's and before, when many people were illierate, surnames were written
by clerks, officials, and priests as they heard the name pronounced which lead to different spellings of the same name.
Spelling continued to be fluid until this century, when now we are often unaware of the origin and evolution of our surname
and its spelling variations.
