Penny's first involvement with
music was sitting at a piano... age 8, and that turned into a love of gospel music, singing harmony, choir, and chorus all through school. It wasn’t until her mid-twenties that she developed a love for
Bluegrass, and purchased her first
guitar, a 1962 SJ45 Gibson. But it was much later, 1996, when she finally was able to devote enough time to
take guitar lessons.

"I was very fortunate to learn guitar from Lynn Kelley, and she
influenced my music choices to a great degree. From her, I learned about Tim O’Brien, Robin and Linda Williams,
and countless other folk music artists."
Penny eventually put together
a small acoustic group, “Quality Time". She had also started learning dobro, and began playing with
Southern Branch, a local bluegrass group. "That gave me a chance to play dobro... sort of 'learn as you go'."
