The Rose By the Door
Who are
the men we honor today?
Why were
they willing to give their lives away?
They rode
off to war with a tear in their eye.
They told
wife, children and mother the last goodbye.
They knew
not the outcome of that terrible war
But they
would fight for the southland and the rose by the door.
They left
ole Virginia
not knowing if they’d be back.
These
brave southern men, carrying a quilt and haversack.
That quilt
had stitches and remnants from home.
Scraps
of cloth that reminded them of Nancy and John.
While
the snow fell around them and the north wind did roar
They huddled
‘neath the quilt and dreamed of the rose by the door.
Some men
were injured and barely survived
Hospitalization
and prison but they came out alive.
Finally
going back home to their loved ones once more
At last,
they could see the REAL rose by the door.

The question has arisen
about why we need to save the old Civil War Battlefields. After all, we could destroy this piece of our history and heritage
and build a fishpond that might employ 60 people during construction.
The National Park Service
has published a report from the Civil War Sites Advisory Commission that gives some excellent reasons why Civil War Battlefields
should be preserved. This report does not say either side was right or wrong, it simply says that this is an important part
of American history that must be maintained for future generations. Reading about the
history of the Civil War does not compare to actually standing on a battlefield and seeing the terrain.
Folks, we carry the mantle!
It is our responsibility to pass this on to our children and their children. They MUST be allowed to have the opportunity
to walk across the battlefield at Saltville, or New Market, or Appomattox. They must be given
the chance to stand where their forefathers stood and possibly fell.
"The Civil War transformed a loose federation of states into a unified and confident nation that launched into the 20th century
as the world's leading economic producer and foremost democratic nation." Our ancestors caused this to happen. And now someone
wants to invade AGAIN and build a fish farm where our ancestors stood and fought for their beliefs!?!!
History seems to be repeating
itself. Instead of having guns and sabers aimed at us, on our own soil, we now are threatened with bulldozers and political
maneuvers.
