POEM

The Binding of the Witch.
by John Hayes

The girl is bound
thrown in the moat.
Her body floats!

Grapples grab bedraggled body
lift it to the shore.
Soldiers bind her to the stake
ignite hickory sticks about her feet.
The pastor shouts to God his praise
frenzied masses celebrate.

Her intimate waits on the forest edge.
When all is quiet in the early morn
he'll take her bones and cast them to the sky
and where they fall all life shall barren be,
forevermore.
