This site is dedicated to the study of the
history of the Massie family from Greasy Ridge, Mason Twp, Lawrence Co, OH. My Grandfather Fred Levi Massie was born on Greasy
Ridge as was his father Elza Massie. Elza's father Jeptha seems to have migrated to Greasy Ridge from Monroe Co, West Virginia.
The family eventually ended up in Springfield, OH which is where I was born. Jeptha was born in VA; probably Monroe Co (now
West Virginia) in about 1821, a son of Jeptha Massie, Jr and Anna Meadows. Soon the family relocated to Mason Township, Lawrence
County, Ohio where they settled on Greasy Ridge. Jeptha and Mary married November 18, 1841 in Lawrence County. It appears
that Mary was a Massie before her marriage to Jeptha. There has been speculation that she was a daughter of Jonathan Massie
and Margaret Roach which would make them 1st cousins once removed. This has not been conclusively proved (to my knowledge).
Jeptha served in the Civil War in the 23rd Ohio Infantry. He became ill and was sent home from Cumberland, Maryland. On October
30, 1865 he died on Greasy Ridge. He is buried at the Fox-Fairview Cemetery in Walnut Twp, Gallia Co, OH. His grave was recently
decorated by the Sons of Union Soldiers of the Civil War. Mary married Thomas Higgins in 1882. She passed away August 6, 1906.
her final resting place is yet unknown.
