Scott Barnum graduated from the University of Iowa with a B.M. in Classical double-bass performance. His classical training and interest in modern music brought him a scholarship to the New England Conservatory where he received a graduate degree. He has played jazz throughout Iowa, the greater Boston area and in New York City at The Knitting Factory.

Scott's creativity and wide range of musical styles enable him to adapt to diverse musical situations. Scott has recorded four albums with the Adam Berenson Trio and one duet album with Adam Berenson.  In addition Scott  has performed with the Brook Sofferman Trio, the experimental quartet, Wet Street, the Ran Blake Group, Dave Liebman, and Pursuance.
