Phil Schmehl -- Head Rowing Coach -- University of Mary Washington, Fredericksburg, VA
 
Returning this summer to camp is Coach Schmehl!  Schmehl is currently the head rowing coach at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia.  He came to the University of Mary Washington from Charlottesville, VA, where he was the head coach of the Rivanna Rowing Club.
Prior to moving to Virginia, he completed his master's degree from Smith College in Northampton, MA, and assisted with the Smith College program for two years, and also served as the head of the Northampton Youth and Community Rowing program. He received his bachelor's degree in English from Bucknell University in 1999.
A four-year collegiate rower at Bucknell, Schmehl was the president of the crew club his senior year, assisting with practices, fundraising, organization, and web page design. He was named to the US Rowing's second team honor roll in 1999, and gained nine career medals, including six golds and three silvers.
Schmehl is certified by US Rowing as a level III coaching member, is American red Cross lifeguard, CPR, and first aid qualified, and has also had experience coaching with the Yankee Rowing Club in Hadley, MA, as well as at Oregon State University in Corvallis, OR.

Briana Schulte, Women's Coach, University of Pennsylvania

Briana Beacom (now Schulte) will return this summer to Crew Camp!  Briana was hired as an assistant coach with the Penn women's rowing program in the fall of 2008 and enters her first year as an assistant coach with the program.  Prior to Penn, Briana coached at Purdue University, Washington College, and Northwestern University. 

As a rower, Schulte competed for three years with the Pocock Elite Sculling Team in Seattle, Washington, as well as the Vesper Boat Club in Philadelphia. With the Pocock team, she competed in U.S. National Team selection regattas as well as Pan Am Games trials, and medalled multiple times at U.S. Nationals. Schulte also trained in the USRowing Development Camp in Boston in 2001, and the Chicago River Rowing Center and Lincoln Park Rowing Club from 1998-2000.

Briana graduated from Kenyon College with a degree in anthropology, earning Phi Beta Kappa and Summa cum Laude. She also holds a Master of Public Health degree from Purdue.

Camp Director

Caren Saunders -- Novice Women's Rowing Coach at Washington College. Coach Saunders is a USRowing Certified Level III Coach. As a rowing instructor, Coach Saunders has experience with all ages and abilities. More importantly, as an experienced classroom teacher, Coach Saunders applies current educational theory to the process of learning to row and improving rowing skill. She brings her knowledge of individual learning styles on the water and helps all rowers achieve maximum potential.

Coach Saunders is very passionate about the sport of rowing and continues to row and race competitively.  She graduated from the University of Virginia where she rowed for 4 years, and before that rowed with her high school program (Thomas Jefferson High School in Alexandria, Va).  She also coaches at the Naval Academy's Navy Rowing Camp for Girls in Annapolis.
