| Beethoven, a formerly homeless senior who is now a resident pet at Sunrise and LOVING it! |
Welcome to New Beginnings, a unique non profit organization dedicated to providing homeless, senior companion
animals with a new beginning!
About Us:
Inspired by Beethoven, not the composer but a 12 year old
chocolate lab (pictured above) that was surrendered to the Associated Humane in Newark when his humans lost their house
to foreclosure. Beethoven was languishing in the shelter, depressed and suffering from the loss of his family.
He found his way into the Sunrise Assisted Living Facility (see story below)
and in doing so, the simplest of ideas became a reality for other pets just like him. Who better to care for and respect
a senior pet than those who also seek to age gracefully? And who better to provide comfort, friendship and fun
to those who, even in the most modern and ideal facilities, are at risk for lonlieness, depression or just
plain monotony? A resident pet makes makes people feel more at home and useful. The medical and mental benefits
of having a pet are well documented. The pet overpopulation issue and euthansia are also a reality, albeit one
that is often pushed under the rug. Older dogs have the least chance of being adopted in a shelter environment
and rescue groups and "foster" homes are always at a premium. NB is working to make Beethoven's (and his new family's)
happy ending the final page for as many pets and people as possible.
