About Us:

Inspired by Beethoven, not the composer but a 12 year old chocolate lab (pictured above) that was surrendered to the Associated Humane in Newark when his humans lost their house to foreclosure.  Beethoven was languishing in the shelter, depressed and suffering from the loss of his family.   He found his way into the Sunrise Assisted Living Facility (see story below) and in doing so, the simplest of ideas became a reality for other pets just like him.  Who better to care for and respect a senior pet than those who also seek to age gracefully?  And who better to provide comfort, friendship and fun to those who, even in the most modern and ideal facilities,  are at risk for lonlieness, depression or just plain monotony?  A resident pet makes makes people feel more at home and useful.  The medical and mental benefits of having a pet are well documented.  The pet overpopulation issue and euthansia  are also a reality, albeit one that is often pushed under the rug.  Older dogs have the least chance of being adopted in a shelter  environment and rescue groups and "foster" homes are always at a premium.  NB is working to make Beethoven's (and his new family's) happy ending the final page for as many pets and people as possible.

Mission Statement:  We strive to give senior companion animals a chance to continue to give and receive the love and care they deserve!  We also recruit assisted living facilites for the resident pet program and educate them on the repsonsibility and rewards of a "resident pet".

Meet our founder and read Beethoven's story in her own words: Merynda Fuellhart, New Beginnings founder, met Beethoven while working in the pharmaceutical industry and he changed her life.   She had been working in rescue in her spare time as a volunteer for several years when he came along. Of course, everyone at work wondered if Merynda had kids (she does!), since the only pictures in her office were of her rescues (4 big guys at the moment). Here is the start of the story, in Merynda's words:  My boss, seeing these pictures, asked if I could help find a home for a standard poodle. I put out some feelers, and long story short, I have since placed 16 dogs either in assisted living facilities or private homes. My first senior dog was Beethoven. He is a 12 year old chocolate lab that was surrendered to the Associated Humane in Newark when his humans lost their house to foreclosure. He was actually dying of a broken heart and they called me to see what I could do. My daughter works for the Sunrise Senior Living company, and we appealed to their directors to see if someone wanted an older dog. Beethoven is now firmly ensconced at the Sunrise in Edgewater and living the life of luxury. His caretaker there is "one of us" and absolutely loves this dog. He even rides the lift on the bus to join the seniors on their outings (see the photo on the "How You Can Help" " page, linked on the left)!  So began New Beginnings-Inspired by Beethoven. He was the first of 4 dogs that are now living in these facilities. " Seeing the mutual benefits clearly, Sunrise has committed to making a companion animal part of every facility.
