Excursions 1999
This page details the vacations and work trips that we took in 1999. Just click on any of the photos to get a bigger picture.
Graves Mountain, Virginia (April 1999)
Here's the gang at the seventh (?) annual family get-together at Graves Mountain Lodge, Virginia. This year Rick came up from C-ville to join in on the fun. |
JazzFest, New Orleans (April 1999)
For the first (and hopefully not the last) I traveled to New Orleans with a group of Lodgers (i.e., fraternity friends) for annual New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. The Festival was jam-packed with food and great music. At night we sampled some of the tea and crumpets down on Bourbon Street.
Here's Billy Hearns, Jim Hecklinger, Gary, and Jim Otis (l to r). Why is Jimmy O. looking so grumpy? |
Here's the gang again, this time we're enjoying crawfish, smoked turkey legs, and crawfish bread. Mmmmmm. |
That's Billy and Jim on the balcony of our hotel. We just nearby the French Quarter near Canal street. |
There is Billy and Carey at the Pelican Club. Tal made reservations months ago and this place was worth it. |
There's the Congo Stage (an outdoor stage) at the grounds of the Jazz Festival. The group on-stage was from Trinadad and Tobago and they were asking the crowd to "show me your sexy finger." Yikes! |
Here's Tal in the French Quarter near Preservation Hall. In this picture Tal is being swindled by a very bad "human-statue" performance artist. |
Carey's VT Graduation (May 1999)
Although this wasn't a vacation, Carey did finally graduate in May from Virginia Tech with a M.S. in Environmental Engineering.
Carey and his mother after the ceremonies. |

Carey and Bev. |
Carey and his former supervisor, Nick Lailas. Nick was instrumental in helping me attend my graduate program. Nick was there to see his wife receive her Ph.D in Public Policy. |
Carey and his VT thesis advisor, Tom Grizzard, Ph.D. |
Davidson's Visit to DC (May 1999)
Craig, Lynda, and Brianna had a fun time when they came to DC for a Memorial Day vacation.
That's Carey and Craig at the very nice fountain in the Sculpture Garden. |
There's Lynda and Brianna underneath our silver maple tree. |
Bullpasture Mountain Bike Ride (June 1999)
Bev and Carey had a great time camping and mountain bike riding in the George Washington National Forest.
The ride starts on Route 678 and heads south towards Williamsville. At Williamsville we took a left onto Route 614 and headed North along a very rural road that is mostly gravel. We then traveled 1.5 miles up and over Bullpasture Mountain. Here's picture of a very tired Bev at the summit of Bullpasture Mountain. |
We then forded a small feeder stream and Bullpasture River to re-join Route 678. Here's Bev crossing the small feeder stream. |
Here Carey is getting his feet wet crossing Bullpasture River. |
Here's Bev in front of the picturesque Clover Creek Presbyterian Church. |
Beach Week at Dewey, DE (July 1999)
Here's Rudy and Carey relaxing after a looong day of sand, swim, and cut-throat scrabble playin'. Nearly every year, Rudy and Suly are gracious enough to sponsor poor yuppies from Washington, DC and Baltimore to spend a week at the beach. If only more people would think about the yuppies. Can somebody please think about the yuppies! |
Harvey and Cath order up sweet treats at Dairy Queen or as we like to call it - the DQ. |
On the Rehobeth boardwalk, Cath and Rachael strike a pose. Vogue! |
Fishing on the Bay (August 1999)
On this trip the gang (Carey, Dad, Hap, Susan, Matt, and Mr. B) went chum fishing in the Chesapeake Bay, MD. In order to catch the fish you must have your line in the "chum zone" as opposed to the "chump zone." It also helps if you're on the good side of Capt'n Bob. Our fearless Capt'n scared away other boats with lines like, "hey buddy, get that piece of s**t out of my chum line."
Here Dad and Sue looking to hook the big one. |
Here's Mr. B looking his funky fresh "fly" self with his hat all sideways-like. |
Jimmy and Virg Visit DC (September 1999)
Jimmy and Virg visited the Nation's capital and Monticello. We also got in some hiking on one of our favorite trails - White Oak Canyon Trail in the Shenandoah National Park. |
Work Trips (October 1999)
Bev and Carey didn't see much of each other during the month of October. For the first two weeks, Bev was doing some research in Ghana and South Africa. She's working on a paper about adolescent reproductive health issues in developing countries. An exhausting trip, but she did have a few hours of fun. Carey's trip during the third week of October took him to two offshore oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico.
Here she is at the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa - the farthest south she's ever been. |
These teenage girls are peer educators at their junior high school in Accra, Ghana. I interviewed young people to get a sense of what obstacles they face receiving services and sexual health information. |
That's Carey (on left) with his colleague in front of the helicopter used to visit two offshore drilling rigs. We're standing on the Ram/Powell TLP offshore rig helipad (about 88 miles south of Mobile, AL). |
Here's another shot looking back towards the rig. These structures are anchored into the seabed so they don't seem like they're floating even though they are in over 3,000 feet of water. |
Belize and Guatemala (November 1999)
Manatee at Swallow Caye, Belize |
This trip was our big vacation for the year. We went from reefs to ruins to rainforests. What an adventure! Check out our Big Belize Page for more photos. |
