LICSN held a series of regional meetings in 2007 and 2008 to encourage local and regional initiatives aimed at publicizing global warming and promoting policy changes.  LICSN maintained a calendar of events through the spring of 2009.  During the summer of 2009 there will be no updates to this website.

Prior Events:

January 29, 2009. 4:30 pm to 8 pm.  Scoping Meeting for Atlantic Sea Island Group’s LNG proposal.   Long Beach Public Library, 111 West Park Avenue, in Long Beach. The public speaking portion of this crucial hearing, the most important aspect to the scoping process, is scheduled for 6-8 PM. An open house is scheduled at the library between 4:30 and 6:00 PM as well.  It is imperative that as many LNG opponents as possible show up for the public meeting at 6:00 PM.  More info at http://www.CleanOceanAction.org

Jan. 28 and 29. 4 to 9 pm. NYS Sea Level Rise Task Force.  The public is invited to a series of meetings about the effects of sea level rise and development of recommendations for adapting to rising sea levels. Agency staff will make several presentations at 7 pm. Wed. January 28. Nassau County Legislative Chamber, 1st Floor, Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building, 1550 Franklin Avenue. February 5. 4 pm to 6 pm.  National Teach in on Global Warming at C.W. Post. LOCATION: Pioneer Room, Hillwood Commons, C.W. Post, Brookville, NY.  Introduction by Dr. Scott Carlin. Presentations: ECOART.  Introduction by Dr. Rachael Baum (invited).  Environmental artists work with, on, and for, the environment.  Leading ecoartists discuss their work and the changing relationships between art, nature and society.  SLIDE PRESENTERS: Prof. Richard Kirk Mills, Prof. Winn Rea, William Schuck.  (For events at other Long Island sites visit the national web site.)

February 12th from 10am-12pm for "Managing Lean and Green Forum: Political Climate Change." Pratt Center for Community Development (144 W. 14th Street in Manhattan).  Information will be presented on policies and programs that can dramatically increase the energy efficiency of NYC's housing and buildings.  For more information or to register

February 17, 7 pm. Student Center at Stony Brook Southampton.  “Biodiversity, Carbon, or Economic Collapse: Defining our Existential Crisis.”  Presentation by Scott Carlin.  How do we grapple with the simultaneous crises presented by Global Warming, Species Extinctions, Peak Oil, and the Current Financial Crisis?   Do they all share a common set of underlying causes?  How do we respond forcefully and rapidly to shift directions?

February 24, 7 pm.  Hampton Bays Library.  Peter Maniscalco will discuss Cancer as a Hero’s Journey: A motivational program for a time of challenge.  This program is for anyone touched by cancer: patients, their families, friends, and supporters. 

February 26, 7 pm Huntington Library.  Presentation by the Long Island Progressive Coalition.  Jared Diamond’s Collapse and Climate Change.  Jared Diamond Video and Discussion with Scott Carlin and David Sibek.

Thursday, March 12, 2009, from 1:00-2:30 pm Energy Efficiency Stimulus Funding Technical Assistance.  Online Presentation.  Under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, state and local governments will receive substantial funding to implement energy efficiency initiatives in their jurisdictions. Join the U.S. EPA's ENERGY STAR team for this practical session that will provide you with the knowledge you need to leverage ENERGY STAR resources. Friday, March 27th - Sunday, March 29th, 2009.  1st New York Women's Conference for Sustainability - Mobilizing for climate stability one conversation at a time.  Keynote addresses from grassroots environmental leaders will be interspersed with a weekend-long series of participatory World Café and self-initiated Open Spaces events. April 1. 7:30 pm.  Pisces Restaurant, Babylon.  Presentation by Scott Carlin.  “Global Warming: How Immediate is the Crisis?”  Global Warming is not just a crisis of ecology, it effects our economy and our ability to produce energy. An economy run by corporations is failing us. Corporations are legally required to place the interests of shareholders ahead of planetary health.  We need a broader model of democracy which would allow us to quickly and fairly dial down our consumption while focusing on fulfilling basic human needs.  Sponsored by the Babylon Greens.

Thursday, April 16th, at 8pm, PeaceSmiths, Inc.  “How-To Save The Earth in Two Minutes"  This is a participatory event. Audience members are invited to share their two minutes worth of ideas, solutions, or artwork on the topic. The event will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Amityville on 25 Broadway/rt110 (Southmost end near Merrick Rd/Montauk hwy). April 22, 2009.  G.A.I.N. (Green And Invovled Now) and The Rogers Memorial Library (Southampton Village) are planning a bus trip to New York to the Museum of Natural History to see the climate crisis exhibit on Earth Day.  Information to follow in the Library’s Spring Newsletter.

Germany Begins Ban on Polluting Cars in City Centers. Drivers in Berlin, Cologne and Hanover are now required to display a coloured badge showing the level of pollution caused by their vehicle, with a scale of red, yellow and green. An estimated 1.7 million old diesel cars and vans, will not qualify for even the most polluting red badge.
