Loudoun Symphony Youth Orchestra Auditions
Saturday, September 12, 9:30am-8:00 pm
Held at Wayne's World Studio #4
This is an amazing opportunity for students who love to play to find an ensemble outside of school where
they can play more music, and meet other musicians from the county.
This is an especially great opportunity for wind players to play within an orchestral setting. There's a whole other world of music that comes through orchestral playing, one that offers many challenges and
a lot more independence than when playing within a large section in a band.
Auditions are open to students 10-18 years of age who have at least 3 years of private instruction or
playing experience in school ensembles.
Audition requirements include major scales up to 4 sharps and 4 flats, plus a preparedpiece,
plus sightreading.
If a student is accepted, the tuition for the school year is $300, and there are some scholarships available.
For All String Students:
There is another great opportunity for playing, in addition to the Youth Orchestra. There will be a FREE string workshop
ensemble, with rehearsals every Wednesday during the school year, from 7 PM - 7:30 PM. There are NO auditions required to
enter this program.

New String Students!
How do I hold my instrument?? (and other timely suggestions!)
(Under Construction)
For Violin and Viola Students:

Make sure you start with good posture!
What a pretty wrist!
Here is what your bow hold should look like.

Your thumb should be resting and "peeking" over.
Not hanging WAY over or tucked behind the instrument.
Winter String Blues....
For everyone
who might be new to taking care of a string instrument winter is a special time of the year. String instruments
require a little extra love when it gets cold outside. Here are some things to consider with your instrument...
1. Buy a dampit (make sure you check your dampit often
to rewet it). Dampits are availible at most music stores and prevent the instrument from cracking.
2. Humidifiers in the room with your instrument
are always great for extra moister.
3. Try to avoid leaving your instrument in the
car for too long.
4. NEVER STORE YOUR INSTRUMENT NEAR A
HEATER OR WINDOW!!! Ms. Kathy a long long time ago learned terrible things will happen in the winter to your instrument
when you do this.
