Mary Newell

[If] not love

Tomorrow

I’ll be tangled in a teaching web

administering words.

Tonight, tho,

not knowing your last name

or origins

I smile to see you

enter.

Following your every step

I synchronize to your syncopation

figure your feints, mostly,

laugh when I’m caught off-guard

We match each other’s pressure

Then let each other go.

Since it’s not love,

it must be

tango

where all’s fair too.
