I am by no means an expert in four wheeling, hell I have only been doing it in an organized fashion for about a year or so. Before then it was years ago and I did many things that should not be done, such as wheeling alone and without any safety equipment. I am going to try to give some advise that I hope will help.

  1. Join an organized club, or go with a group that is experienced. NEVER go alone. The advise and spotting help ( telling you where to put your tires on rocks and etc.) of an experienced person is invaluable. There is also safety in numbers, plus you will have help if you break down or get stuck. To help locate a club in your area go to www.ufwda.org
  2. Be prepared, the minimum safety equipment you should have is listed in a table below.
  3. Some items that should be taken with you are food, water, toilet paper, paper towels, hand sanitizer, trash bags ( to take all of your trash with you and to clean up after others who left their trash behind.) tools, leather gloves, spare vehicle fluids and parts if possible, maps and or GPS, a CB radio, cell phone, rain gear, towels, and more depending on the situation.
  4. Only four wheel on designated trails, stay off of private property without permission.
  5. Follow the practicies of Tread Lightly. www.treadlightly.org
  6. Use common sense and know your abilities and those of your vehicle.

Minimum Safety Equipment You Should Have
Working Fire Extinguisher
First Aid Kit
Tow Strap/Rope or Winch
Safety Belts for ALL occupants
Full Sized Spare Tire, jack that will lift your vehicle, and a lug wrench
Tow Hooks Front and Rear ( or other suitable attaching point)
