The Montachusett Interfaith Hospitality Network was created to provide shelter, meals, and comprehensive support to families
without homes. A family is considered a unit with adult(s) and children. A network director administers the program
and provides social services to the families in the network. The program can assist 3-5 families (about 14 people) at
any one time.
During the day, families receive assistance from the network director at
the day center to find homes and other social services. During the evening and overnight, Host congregations provide
volunteer support and meals for the families. There are currently 10 host congregations in the network, so our church
serves a “rotation” every 10 weeks.
Our congregation serves at a central site. This facility provides two
apartments for the families to use.
On weekdays guests arrive at 5:00 pm, remain overnight and leave at 7:00
in the morning. Volunteers provide the evening meal at 5:30 pm. In the morning, guests return to a day center.
From there, children go to school and adult guests go to work or look for housing. On weekends, guests do not go to
the day center. They may remain at the central site, go to work and/or run errands.
The following volunteers are needed each rotation:
- Food Coordinator: This person organizes the dinner providers to assure a variety of
meals. This person also makes sure there are plenty of food supplies (staples such as drinks and lunch meat).
- Dinner Provider: Need at least one person per night to prepare a nutritious meal for
the guests and volunteers (delivered at 5:30 pm).
- Evening Host: Need at least two people to be with the guests from 5:00pm until 8:00pm
every day.
- Weekend Host: Since the Day Center is closed on weekends, volunteers are needed to be with
guests in the morning and afternoon. Morning host is from 8:00am until 12:00pm. Afternoon host is from 12:00pm until
5:00pm.
- Overnight Host: Need at least two people to spend the night with guests from 8:00pm
to 7:00am (8am on weekends). They help guests get settled in for the night and ensure guests get up and going in the
morning.
