Current Projects:

ElderHomes of Richmond - Ongoing

On one saturday per month, PDB/VA conducts a 5-6 hour worksession with ElderHomes, assisting with needed repairs to homes owned by low-income, elderly persons.  These sessions are scheduled the first Saturday following or monthly meetings.  Click on the Upcoming Events page and go to the Volunteer Worksessions heading for details.

Completed Projects:

 

Canstruction, Richmond, Va.,  Completed October 2008 and 2009

PBD/VA has built canned food sculptures for the last 2-years as part of the annual "Canstruction" food drive for the Central Va Foodbank.  Our sculptures have resulted in the donation of nearly 2500 cans of food to the foodbank's pantry program.

 

Caritas, Richmond, Va.,  Completed

PBD/VA has been assisting Congregations Around Richmond Involved to Assure Shelter with the interior design of their new headquarters and family day care facility, which is now completed!  PBD provided a great deal of help in supplying interior finishes and furnishings, saving CARITAS thousands of dollars in finish costs.

Renovation of the Emergency Shelter, Inc.,  Richmond, Va., completed

Extensively renovated for temporary housing of homeless women and children.  PBD  procured furnishings and finishes, including carpet, window treatments, reupholstering of donated furniture, and installation of these items, as well as installation of new donated furniture.  Included an addition installation of a new kitchen, dining and sleeping facilities for thirty people.

Single Room Occupancy Housing of Richmond, completed

Facility provides long-term, affordable housing for fifty working people who may not afford the cost of rental housing on the open market.  PBD aided in the procurement of furniture and finish materials, and installation of furniture and window treatments.

Good Samaritan Inn; Richmond, Va., design completed

With Virginia Commonwealth University, developed a student design competition for the renovation of agency providing housing, job training, counseling, food and clothing for recovering substance abusers who wish to re-inter society.  PBD evaluated the building, built in 1912.  Member architects worked with the City Inspector's office and the owner to develop an affordable means of complying with current building codes.

YMCA Battered Women's Shelter; Richmond, Va., completed

PBD assisted in renovation and expansion, to accommodate thirty women and children who are victims of spousal abuse.  Work involved obtaining new furniture, window treatments, carpet and paint.  Volunteers re-tiled several bathrooms, painted bedrooms, fabricated and hung window treatments, laid carpet and obtained furnishings at no charge to the shelter.

Charity Family Life Center; Richmond, Va., completed

Volunteers developed plans for the interior renovation of multi-use space for after school care and summer instructional programs for low income children, teaching basic skills and personal values.  The children were also involved in the decision and design process with regard to paint colors and activities intended for the space.  Volunteers painted the interior, benches and storage cabinets.

Highland Park Restoration and Rehabilitation Program; Richmond, Va., completed

Organization has purchased and renovated over three dozen homes in the Highland Park area, turning abandoned homes into single-family residences.  Developed an educational/demonstration center in one of its homes for the purpose of aiding buyers of older homes in affordable, historically accurate renovations.  PBD provided interior finish materials.

Friends Association for Children; Richmond, Va., completed

Provides daycare and after-school programs for children in several East Richmond housing projects.  PBD provided free interior design services during the center's expansion and renovation program, as their construction budget had no funds for this service.  Volunteers helped select and obtain donated finish materials.

Barkesdale Theatre; Richmond, Va, completed

Assisted with painting newly renovated, 240 seat theatre, located in former warehouse space.  PBD was one of many volunteer organizations to participate in this project.

William Byrd Community House; Richmond, Va. Master plan completed

With help of a graduate student of the VCU Department of Interior Design worked to develop a master plan for the use of the center’s home, the Grace Arents Building, which originally housed Richmond’s first free public library.  The plan considered short and long-term needs of the center’s staff and program spaces and proposed redesigns of existing spaces within the building.  It also addressed bringing the building into compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act.

Richmond Hill; Richmond, Va. Planning completed

Volunteers provided cost estimating and interior design services for non-denominational retreat, located in former monastic complex.  Also provided materials such as windows and finish materials for first phase of work.

Theatre Virginia; Richmond, Va. completed

Several projects, including renovation of guest box, located in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.  This box is used to entertain guests as part of the theatre’s fund raising activities.  We are currently working with the theatre to obtain new carpet for the house, as well as renovate the actor’s “green room”.  We are also assisting with renovation of the theatre’s actor equity housing apartments.

South Richmond Senior Center; Richmond, Va., Completed

PBD providing labor and donated materials for renovation of low-income senior citizen daycare center.  Work includes vinyl flooring, carpet, kitchen countertops, painting of walls and cabinets, as well as providing new and refinished furniture.
