CHOOSE TO HAVE A VOICE
Our State Constitution provides for contested nonpartisan judicial elections,
to assure that our Judiciary remains accountable to the people and not to the Executive Branch. However, the Governor may
fill judicial vacancies with short-term appointments, effective only until the next election.
Today, these temporary appointees adopt the view that these short-term appointments
somehow entitle them to automatic retention. In defense, they offer only a slogan, - elect the sitting judges - which really
means only, "elect the temporary political appointees." They want you to give up your right to choose and allow the Governor
to choose for you.
These interim appointments were never confirmed by the State Senate or approved
by the citizens, only by a thirteen member commission, chaired and dominated by people selected by the Governor.
Our Constitution gives the right to elect judges to the citizens, not to a nameless
political commission operating behind closed doors, not chosen by or accountable to the people.
